Jay didn't do it from out the kindness of his heart. He saved Def Jam more money by releasing X. Because X wasn't leaving if he still owed money and would even want to start his projects back up. So rather go back and forth, jay released him to Sony.

This doesn’t make sense. Artists get shelved all the time without being able to get out of their contracts. And I’m not an accountant but $12 million is $12 million to the shareholders of a company.

Only think I can think of is that DMX was notorouous for wasting studio time and award show performances. That and his legal fees.

It's still amazing that even after all he grossed, he still owed after 5 albums.

all true and still the last part like you has me :mindblown:

Oldest trick in the book: Labels charge all kinds of expenses against an artists budget, then say his album didn't recoup and has to pay them back through future royalties as a way to hold them hostage.

there is may be more to it behind the scenes that we dont know about. this doesnt seem feasible, but on the other hand you are correct....they charge you for everything even shyt you dont truly owe. the $12 million wasnt a liquid debt. just everything a label is going to hit you with as you said....some of which we know is unethical but not illegal.

this too. although they couldve put X on ice and he couldnt do shyt about it or ask for an override or buyout from next label. I am just of the stance that if Jay did this Def Jam signed off on it because the $12 mil was a write-off compared to the many millions they profited. and wtf was Ruff Ryders role in all of this in between label business? (cant wait to see the doc)

sn: from all the stuff I have ever heard, X is one of the most arrogant artists I have ever heard spoken about. he has always had this competition with Jay, even recently when he wanted to do Versuz against him. but Irv always talks about their rivalry. Jay was jealous of X too. looks like with this info, Jay comes out looking like the bigger man.

Give me a name of an artist that Jay-Z competed with or had issues with. I'll give you an name that peace'd it up/signed to Roc Nation/started speaking well on his name. Even Killa Cam out here defending Jay-Z. And according to him; Jay was the biggest snake ever (pause :dame:) back in 07.

There's a lot to being in good with maybe the most powerful RAP artist in the industry.

Jay had rapper saying "fukk Colin Kaepernick" in public. He's plenty powerful.
Or they do like a majority of adults and grow up and put petty shyt to the side.:mjtf:

That's because DMX for as big as he was didn't show up for studio sessions, spent money like crazy and had a bad drug habit, at some point it was just cheaper to clear the books and let DMX walk in the long run.
