Might be a NY thing, only because they would send shots at each other on popular songs here. Like Jay dissed Mase on Imaginary Player, then Mase dissed Jay on a few R&B records. Like "Love Me" song with 112.

On Imaginary Player Jay was like

And Mase responded

i lived on 104th and 3rd ave at the time. i was just young and didn't catch sublinmals like i do now
