Normally, I would back Jeff Van Gundy up on shyt like this because he's almost always right about what he says. You can say what you want about him but that's one of the things I really like about him, the fact that he's never afraid to say what's on his mind. And he is almost assuredly correct in the sense that Jimmy Butler will get a max contract from some team out there. But I dont see Green getting a max. I can see him getting paid in the $10 million a year range since Alec Burks just got paid $10.5 million a year, but I'm not sure a team is willing to shell out more than that


I think Van Gundy is trying to gauge what Green's value on the open market will be, and in a sense, he's correct that a team will overpay for him and the Warriors will have to pay a lot to keep him if they choose to do so. But I cant see Green getting paid like that. He hasnt proven nearly enough to warrant a max on the open market, let alone a max extension from the team that he already plays for

The best thing you can do with a Draymond Green type is draft your own. They get made every year.

He might get paid a Max as much for being lucky as for his skill level.

If a team wants him they got to steal him from the warriors since he is a RFA. The warriors are in the luxury tax so for them to match means they are paying basically double his salary. That means if a team really wants him it has to plan to overpay to the point the Warriors owners won't just bite the bullet luxury tax wise. Also teams know the cap is going up to almost a 100 million by the time Green's 4 yr contract would be over. In 2016 the cap jumps 22 million and then the cap is going up by 7 a year on average until 2025.

Anyhow 15 mil out of a 100 isn/t that bad for him if his production stays to where it is now. Yeah he is a great glue man, but nicholas Batum makes about 12 million in a 66 cap million world and thats not a bad deal. factoring in for cap inflation offering him 15 now will be around the equivalent of offering him about 10 by the time his contract is up. Keep in mind this logic applies to all FA this year. There is a good chance a lot of guys will get overpaid this year because teams know the contracts will be cheap against the cap long term.
