Dope album but I won't front at times it does feel like an album
with a bunch of guest appearances of rappers from the 90's it's saving
grace though is that Joey has a very distinct voice.
OH and the moaning about "Teach Me" is completely unwarranted.
shyt is dope
His last album didn't just have funk though it was a pretty varied mix
of R&B, Funk, Hip Hop, Rock, even some Jazz is in there.
I think calling it a throwback is inaccurate because you'd be hard pressed
to find a 70's Funk album that sounds like what he put out.
You might find something as equally eclectic from Funkadelic/Parliament though.
I also disagree with "fresher than the underground" here's one cat
that's easily as fresh as Joey and has very smooth production that's
pretty obviously rooted in the East Coast 90's sound. He's also from NY
as well
On top of that guys like Sean Price, Buckshot, and several other current and
past rappers have dropped music that's pretty clearly inspired by the
boom bap records of the 90's.
