Also I've never understood how not having your heel on the ground but it hovering over the restricted area line would mean it's not a charge. The spirit of the rule means the defender is still in the restricted area.

The only time I don't mind a challenge this early is when it's keeping a star from picking up a foul that would put them in foul trouble like this one would.

It's a really early challenge, but if you can get your star out of foul trouble, then 
yep they gonna have to live with KD getting his, make booker expend energy on the defensive end
