The majority of gun deaths are suicides (Well over 50%). If you magically removed all guns, suicide rates wouldn't change. Cops can't even own guns in Japan, yet the suicide rate there is one of the highest in the world. The majority of gun related homicides are actually drug and gang related. Those homicides nearly all occur in cities with high levels of gun regulation. What John Stewart is really talking about is white people homicides, not deaths that occur in black neighborhoods, otherwise the whole, "More commonsense regulation" falls flat on its face. By 1997 UK banned nearly all private gun ownership and overall crime and homicides did not drop. Folks simply switched to knives. Now the UK is pushing for more regulation of knives. UK TV is full of anti-knife commercials for teens.
On the flip, more guns does not equal more safety. The number of road rage deaths in TX is a perfect example. Most illegal gun ownership is due to straw purchases, where someone goes to a gun shop and buys guns for the purpose of selling or giving to someone who legally can't purchase one. The NRA and gun community refuse to address the subject. The NRA is pro cop and pro gun manufacturers/retailers. They don't give a damn about average gun owners. So the NRA could easily advocate to reduce straw purchases, but they won't as it takes money out of the gun industries pockets.
I just want an honest debate. John Stewart looked stupid when the other guy said that Fentanyl deaths are greater than gun deaths. Remove suicides and gun homicides aren't even close to the number one cause of preventable deaths. I can think of far more legit reasons to own a gun than the right to drink alcohol, and alcohol related deaths are far higher. Drunk driving deaths alone are probably on par or greater than gun related homicides. The Uvalde Incident proved to me that we cannot rely on law enforcement, as they have ZERO legal obligation to save or help you when in need. SCOTUS stated thus in Castlerock vs Gonzalez case. The average pro-gun person is waaaaay too pro law enforcement, despite law enforcement will be the ones to confiscate guns, like they did in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Overall, I'm pro gun, but the public discourse is way off base 99% of the time by both sides. John Stewart simply needs to look up who the previous school shooters were and notice that they all had mental problems and were known by either local law enforcement or the FBI to be a threat.
