I know what OPs talking about and I agree, but the whole phrase should be scrapped cause it is a subtle nod to the idea that speaking coherently is speaking like a white person. I know that's not what people mean by it, but that's what's implied.
EDIT: Whole thing contributes to this idea that black people are a monolith and liking or doing things not a lot of other black people do means you are imitating whiteness.

15 Coli posters record themselves reading a short passage written in neutral English.
5 of the posters are white.
5 of the posters are black.
5 of the posters belong to another race/ethnic group.
The posters read the passage in their natural tone, cadance, and pitch.
They Upload the clips to soundcloud or another similar site.
we make a spin thread posting all of the clips unlabeled and in a random order.
The rest of the coli has to vote on which recordings belong to which groups.
We tally the votes to see just how accurately people can predict the race of a person by their voice alone.
We can make this ten times more interesting by asking the black posters to post two recordings. One recording of them speaking naturally and another when they're deliberately putting on a "white voice."
It would also be interesting to have the voters input their race. Maybe this "white voice" phenomenon is something that only blacks can detect.

man shut the fuk up bIt's kind of ironic how we as a people don't want to have labels and snap conclusions made about who we are or how smart we are because we talk in "ebonics..." but give labels and make snap conclusions about other black people because they talk "white." It's hypocrisy, something we do...a lot. 9/10 if a black person is both talking and sounding "white" they probably grew up around white people and that's likely out of their control. You'd be the same nikkas calling them "fake" if they tried to talk "black."
I went to college and ran into lots of brehs and brehettes who were raised in cac burbs and yeah, they sounded "white." But that doesn't make them any less black than I do. And every single one of them was down for the cause and tryna broaden their horizons by befriending your more stereotypical African American, get in touch with their "identity" I guess. That's all you can ask for.
We gotta stop associating "blackness" with how shytty your life is. Acting "hard," talking in slang, bragging about whose hood was tougher, etc, should not be badges of honor. They're just a part of who you are and don't make you any more or less "black." And yet I regularly see this behavior on this site. That's why we're always in last place...in before the c00n comments.
