i agree and this is where the focus needs to be. there are a lot of voices talking about reparations, but i don't hear or see any of them doing grass roots work, lobbying, or organizing. i can guarantee the reparations movement will be taken more seriously when people actually start putting in work. i can support that.

This. This is why a class action lawsuit filed against the government is necessary. The case would stand on merit - that's how other communities started the process.

Those who live off the reservations and still get checks aren't getting paid directly from the federal government, but from the casino owners and family members.


I'm not, this thread is premised on stupidity. I'm well-past aware that any group can be the specific target of legislation.

Japanese-Americans (none of the non-citizens who'd been interned were included) who had been interned got paid. At the behest of the Japanese-American Citizens League and numerous allied politicians. It was direct payments to those affected.

Native reparations go to independent reservations (which are nations, acting in place of the US states that surround them).

Jews got reparations from France that the US dispersed to Holocaust victims and their direct descendants.

We have neither a federal agency, a nation-state to pressure the US, nor a nation we ourselves exist in.
Comparisons are foolish; we craft our reasoning and our methods for lobbying independently of other groups.

The case was brought by Elouise Cobell, a member of Montana's Blackfeet Tribe, and four other Native Americans in 1996.
(it took over 20 yrs for that case but they did receive funds directly. Not only that, but this set a precedent for future lawsuits ie, the topic of the thread).
Of the $3.4 billion settlement, $60 million goes into a school scholarship fund for Native Americans. This week, Interior officials also announced broad reforms that make it easier to build a home or business on trust land.

Native Americans have to live in some of the most fukked up systems in America. They get shot by cops at an even higher rate than brehs do and there are some places where close to 100% of Native women have been sexually assaulted. In some of those spots you can pretty much assault a Native woman and KNOW that law enforcement won't do shyt about it no matter what, it's that bad.

good for them though. they have an organized strategy for securing grants to improve law enforcement and services for victims of crime. perhaps there's a model there that can be followed?
