He made out like a bandit on this one. The other guys who actually write and spent years at a time on their stuff, I’m not so sure. But this fool came up
How would you know whether that’s a low amount or not?
Y’all crazy
I'm thinking even though he doesn't own 100% of the songs, he does own what can be done with those songs. So Hipgnosis bought the rights to license a song to Coke or Pepsi and they just pay Timberland what he's owed if they don't buy his share outright. The assumption in this thread is that he must not have been getting a good split for his work from the type of deal structure he had prior to selling.
My question would be, wouldn't this Hipgnosis company be getting the same split that JT was getting for his catalog? Do they plan on buying out all the other companies/entities that also were getting a cut for his work?
These topics and inner dealings are so mystified without anyone breaking them down. The numbers are so varied for each artist.

The people buying this music sure seem to think soThey all came out on top.
What is this fantasy that old music has has unlimited upside of profitability come from?
Yea this makes sense. I'm thinking hypothetically, his hit songs + touring could probably make him $20 - $40 million in a decade or two, or he could just sign it all away for $100 million now. Accountants probably laid it out like that and it made sense. The assumption in this thread is that he must not have been getting a good split for his work from the type of deal structure he had prior to selling.

They’re making a gamble that they can get a bigger ROI from the catalog. The people buying this music sure seem to think so
Catalogs always make money, especially when you already know streaming services splinter like the ones we see for TV and movies. They’re making a gamble that they can get a bigger ROI from the catalog.
YMCMB's catalog was $100 mil. Drake's getting $500 mil to make more music. His catalog ain't worth $100 mil on its own yet (when Drake eventually sells his, that price tag will be astronomical) and it makes sense. Only a handful of artists are guaranteed hits on the charts and he's one of them.If course 100M seems low considering what we've seen in the last 20 years. But as some say we don't know the structure.
Ain't Drake's new deal 500M alone? Drake's new music is worth 5 times everything Justin has done so far?

Cats talking about he sold his legacy like that $100M won't be used to set up his great grand kids' grandkids.Brehs talking 100 million is a low amount. He just signed a document, didn't even put in any extra work for said 100 million
Talking about "should've kept for his heirs" like he can't invest those 100 million in something else![]()
