Where i work at there's a few full day classrooms, meaning they are open from 7:30 to 5 everyday usually unless the parents don't come to get em. And a LOT of parents don't come to get them and its not for work related reasons either.

Don't bother me I'll still have 40 hours and that commute will actually be easier to deal with after work after 6 PM.

I read the article and the bill. The thing is, it has good intentions, but the execution is lacking because they obviously didn't consider how school staff & students would be impacted. Just like the failure that is "No Child Left Behind."

Teachers are already underpaid and they'll be guilted into working even later. You're either gonna have overworked teachers or unqualified babysitters with the kids. They gotta work on the structure of regular public school before they get to requiring additional hours.

Not to mention the stipulation that schools have to be open all school year except federal holidays. That means no real breaks outside of the summer. Even more teachers gonna be quitting by Christmas and the kids gonna be miserable. Dealing with them kids all day aint no joke.

I been on my soapbox before about education on here so I won't go into everything but do you know what I hate the most about this? The fact they continue to ignore every piece of data related to how children actually learn. Longer class periods, block scheduling, longer school days and more testing has shown to have the exact OPPOSITE effect of what they claim to be achieving.

If you want to close the so-called achievement gaps, shorten the day and extend the time children have time to play, interact and explore the things that interest them.
