we need to be clear though: is it top 10 rap artist or top 10 rap lyricist?

meaning, black thought is probably not going to make the former but can easily be top 5 in the latter. i feel the need to make this distinction because the ambiguity of the question makes the consistency in responses very confusing. everybody is judging on different merits & rubrics so nikkas need some kind of clarity out the gate

but anyway, i see no problem with anybody putting yeezy as a top 10 rap artist. he's that great

that's the crux of it. Is Kanye a top 50 rapper? Hell no. But as an artist it's hard not have him in my top 20 based on the great run he had

Kanye knows how to make an album. So many great lyricists barely have a run of more than 2 great albums as they don't know how to make great music. While Kanye at least for me had an incredible run of 5 albums from College Dropout to Yeezus.

Kanye has freestyles battle some of the best as a producer, he is very capable of writing lmao
I know this, but the reality is, his best and biggest songs were written for him, which is most of the reason he's excluded from top MC talk. If he was like Dre or Diddy and didn't try to insert himself in that talk, people would let him slide, but, thankfully, that's one of the Hip-Hop rules that still exists.

Is Kanye really more influential than Guwop?

Who has had more clones since 2004?
Kanye, but it gets muddled in the fact that he became a biter himself. Graduation era Kanye was one of the most influential & famous dudes on the planet.

Over a decade later spoiled teenage goofies are wasting thousands of their parents money on his ugly clothes.

A 5 year regional mixtape run doesnt compare

Even before I knew he had writers, I didn't rate Kanye like that. Never did I think he was one of the best rappers. There were times where he made me believe it ("Diamonds from Sierra Leone," "Gorgeous") but that was never his strong suit. At his best, he was a decent MC with above average production.

based on ya logic michael jackson aint a goat....rod temperton wrote the alot of the hits

Michael was writing when he was in the Jackson 5. Rod Temperton stopped working with him after Thriller. :comeon:

Wayne would be a better example.

Either way Kanye’s influence with young Black males has always been overstated. Even his fashion influence was bigger in the white and Asian community.
