Traditional Martial Arts like Karate, Kung-Fu, Hapkido, Tang Soo Do, Aikido etc. are like learning nothing but music theory, but you can't play an instrument, that is traditional martial arts.
BJJ, Judo, Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai, are like playing in a Jazz Band, you may not know music theory to the level of a pure academic, but you can improvise and play more fluidly than a traditional book-only musician 9/10 of the time.
The girl overestimated her abilities because she never went with anyone in her club that size or if they did, they held back, which is a disservice to her and quite dangerous. Sparring and tournaments are the closest thing you can do to simulate a "street confrontation", but when it goes down for real outside of the club, you can at least control your adrenaline dump and better gauge a situation and think tactically. To me, it really looked like she wanted to just try her moves on someone and thought they would get wrecked...
