Breh, you can employ a power running game from the spread...they did it at Oregon for years with Johnathan Stewart,LeGarrette Blount, Kenjon Barner, LaMichael James,DeAnthony Thomas etc.

The Pats have done the same thing in the NFL for a while now.
pats barely spread anymore. I know lamichael james, kenjon barner and deanthony thomas werent no power running game backs either :pachaha: you cant consider option run plays power run plays either

They aren't "power backs" but schematically, the spread has allowed those Oregon teams to employ a power running game for years.

a power running game isn't exclusively a ground and pound one either

I dont know man..... When the Gators had Tebow, Demps, Rainey and them boys... They had a spread power run game. They ran a TON of dives with those speed guys and it was effective. I didnt watch much of the Eagles games, but IMO you can have a Power Run game out of the spread.

I think its just semantics...we have a different view of what a power running game is :manny:

Deseans always been a one trick pony who could make big plays down the field every so often but whenever he faced a good and tough physical corner his tiny ass would get shut down

This. If it's not going his way early he loses focus. I remember him playing like a bytch against the Pats a few seasons ago

Smash mouth isnt just running it up the middle.

Smash mouth means '3 yards and a cloud of dust'. It means slowly chipping away at the defense and controlling the time of possession. Does this sound like the Eagles?

62 - The percentage of run plays for the Eagles when they were leading in the second half of games last year. That ranked No. 1 in the NFL. The previous year under Andy Reid, that number was 37 percent, which ranked dead last. Granted, the Eagles only won four games and didn’t have a lot of leads in 2012, but you get the point.

The Eagles’ run game was successful last year even when defenses knew what was coming. Opponents consistently stacked the box and played with a single high safety. In the fourth quarter, LeSean McCoy averaged 6.0 YPC, per STATS, LLC.

sounds like smash mouth football.

the eagles passed more than they ran the ball tho
508 passes, 500 runs

compare them to a real smashmouth run-first team like Seahawks or Niners where each team had nearly 100 more rush attempts than pass attempts...

I dont think you can consider philly a smash mouth run-first team. when you pass more than you run theres no way you can say running the ball is the primary way of moving the ball...yes, even in this era.

:aicmon: really breh? 8 more passes than runs and that automatically excludes them from being smashmouth? Chip is, and has always been, a run first, play-action coach. You're just nitpicking at stats breh

More like emotional outbursts from eagles fans. My beef is with the article suggesting that desean didnt alter the way teams prepared for and played against philly which is BS. Chip is an offensive genius, he knows lining up jacks and mcoy on opposite sides of the formation caused problems for damn near everyone. The eagles have a finesse running game and it works. The intermediate passing game works to the strengths of their qb and not necessarily desean.
They didnt line up mccoy & jax on opposite sides tho. Djax towards the end up of the season was motioning in the back field. Because physical corners were taking him out of the game.

Article is hilarious...

At the very least this will serve as great real world proof of what happens when you run against a team that just put's one extra man in the box on defense...because that is what the eagles will see this year...

yes, really
theres a difference between a balanced, quick-paced team with tons of plays and smashmouth, run-first power running team that dares you to stop the run and runs between the tackles a ton.

a smashmouth team brings one WR in a power formation, shows the run, and then runs the ball.

a smashmouth team runs out of 21/22 personnel a ton, its their bread and butter

the Niners used a 22 personnel formation nearly a QUARTER of their plays, and Seattle nearly a FIFTH
meaning, just one WR on a quarter of plays used. a smashmouth football offense is by definition conservative and is designed to grind out the clock.

how many 22 personnel plays have the eagles ran ?

judging by the fact that eagles when passing faced 4+ dbs 88% of the time when seattle faced 4+dbs only 65%, carolina 58% and SF 39% of he time...not many.

No team saw fewer than five defensive backs more than Denver, but Philadelphia was just behind. In fact, Eagles’ passers faced Nickel 81 percent of the time, which easily paced the league. Nick Foles will need to get used to facing an extra cornerback on a majority of his attempts.

lol at teams using nickel 80%+ of time against whats supposed to be a traditional power running 'smashmouth' team :mjlol:

No one in here saying they're smashmouth is traditional, quite the contrary breh. The fact that the Eagles had the leading rusher in the league with the majority of defenses playing nickel coverages says more about how effective the "traditional" idea of smashmouth football is.
