Watching this shyt now, I'm on episode 4. What a fukking mess all this was.
Saddest part for me was Ho Chih Minh appealing to us to support Vietnamese independence as he saw the corrolaries between our own colonial battle for independence and getting the cold shoulder due our fear of communism :francis:

Vietnam and United States are now more aligned than ever and ironically in our efforts to curb china expansion in SE asia

While in college I had an internship and my direct report was a guy who served in Vietnam.

He told me all types of stories. Came back and home and was so messed up mentally that he got hooked on heroin.

He had to sleep with his shotgun during storms cuz the thunder reminded him of bombs.

Messed his marriage and life up. Took him years to get right. He had been sober for 10 years by the time we met

That’s some of what helped to do my uncle in. I didn’t get to know him, but I can tell my pops really looked up to him, even though he was angry at some of the foul shyt he did. It took years to gather what he was like because my dad didn’t like to talk much about his childhood (it was rough af).

He was a star athlete in football and basketball. Got drafted and served as an infantryman with the 2/503rd, 173rd airborne brigade. Went to Vietnam in 1968 and 1970. Started shooting dope over there, and fukkin with some Vietnamese chick. Came home and started a family but was still on dope. Got a call one day from the Vietnamese girl, that she had moved to the US. Ran off on his sons to be with her in Harlem. They shot up heroin, stole, and we’re sharing needles until he got HIV. My dad was mad at him but let me meet him as a baby before he died of AIDS.

He’s buried next to my Grandad, next to some woods, who was a veteran of WWII in the Pacific. My dad used to describe them both as scoundrels and changed the subject. He also ran off on all the kids he made around the country (his kids are our connection to New York, New Jersey, and a bunch of other places), he refused to talk to my dad and his siblings until he softened up for the grandkids. We would walk to his house from my grandma’s and he’d give us oatmeal pies and orange soda while telling us war stories. Binge drinking killed him through heart failure. We didn’t find out how shytty he was until after he died.

Everyone else on my dad’s side are buried in a nice cemetery on the other side of town. Just my grandad and uncle buried off to themselves, in a neglected overgrown church cemetery.

Even the M16s kept jamming and needed to be cleaned :what:

What kind of monumental, sloppy fukk up was this? :what:

Kickbacks for contracts. The M1, M1a, and M14’s were proven, but got bushed. The M16’s got fixed eventually, but those first iterations got dirty as fukk. I wish everyone would just switch over to the gas piston model, gas impingement is a lot more reliable than it was, but it will fukk up if you don’t lube it correctly and get into a protracted fight.
