Kendrick is tied with Kanye as having the most classics in one shot

Damn

Mr Morale is a great album but not classic. And time will tell with GNX. I’m giving it a 4.5/5 right now but I can see myself giving it a perfect 5 in the near future. We’ll see of there’s really a deluxe coming or it’ll end up being a brand new project. As it stands right now its the clear cut best album 2024.

Nas still has everyone beat with 5

Illmatic
It Was Written
Stillmatic
Life Is Good
Kings Disease 3

And Nas discography is DEEP. If Kendrick is still putting out classic albums at age 50 we’ve got something to talk about.
Those are not classics you can like them but absolutely in no way is KD3 or LIG a classic. They’re solid albums. Nas has 3 classics.

808s is polarizing even though it unarguably inspired Drake, Cole, Wale, and pretty much every single rapper of note who debuted post 2010. If you want to call it a classic based on pure impact I wouldn’t argue at all but for me personally as a complete body of work its uneven (mostly because Kanye cannot fukkING SING to save his life)

But fukk it. If we want to say Kanye has 5 lets give him 5. But I don’t think its indisputable like the shot from CD to Graduation.

Kings Disease 3 is the highest acclaimed rap album of 2022, thats OVER Mr Morale so if we’re going on by critical acclaim, which many are sighting for Kendrick then yes, KD3 is a classic.

Same thing for Life Is Good. It got classic ratings in REAL time from XXL. The Source named it the best album of 2012 (OVER Good Kid M.A.A.D City)

Fam KD3 & LIG sonically, lyrically are not classics. Acclaim is not the end all be all for me, at the end of the day that’s other people’s opinions.

If you wanna pull the solid but not classic card with GNX I think you could. I’ll even agree with Mr Morale not being a classic just for the sake of objective conversation because as cohesive as it is, one could say the sound was too left field in approach, fine.

With all that mentioned, LIG, KD3, solid albums, nothing classic about them tho.

In the critic world, we don't consider any album that only got reviewed by 11 critics lol, because the most publications review your album, the harder it is for you to have a score over 80.

Universal acclaim = over 81/100 on metacritic, but most importantly, we always agreed on the fact AT LEAST 20 scores from major publications had to be taken into consideration. KD3 is basically one of the least reviewed rap album ever.

As for LIG, you also only name 1 publication... However, Metacritic does End of the Year Top 10 Lists Compilations each year, they basically list the albums most frequently mentioned by individual music publications in their year-end Top Ten lists, there's often between 100 and 300 professional lists taken into consideration.
AOTY was Frank Ocean, followed by Good Kid maad City by Kendrick Lamar, and the only other rap album in the top 10 comes at #10 and is RAP by Killer Mike.

Like Elliott Wilson said, Life Is Good got forgotten years ago and didn't really got any high praise on end year lists.
