I never considered damn a classic,it’s close but a few songs were really chasing the mainstream sound. Damn is probably better bars wise but I’m so cali biased I will always be bumping this on repeat over Damn, it’s crazy how regional sound influences people

131 individual top ten lists from major publications (including hiphop) were made in 2012

Frank Ocean's Orange came at #1
Kendrick's Good Kid maad city came at #2
Tame Impala's Lonerism came at #3

Nas' Life is good wasn't even top 20 that year

So yeah sure, the source gave it a nice placement on their list in 2012, but the source is only 1 publication out of 131

You all determine what a classic album is based on what someone says in articles? Not based on how you feel? How the music affected you and how much you liked the content, but what someone else said?

I could see using that to add objectivity to the argument as deeming something classic shouldn't be about an individuals opinion..

But I'm torn as most of the writers on that list likely don't actually listen to rap

In the critic world, we don't consider any album that only got reviewed by 11 critics lol, because the most publications review your album, the harder it is for you to have a score over 80.

Universal acclaim = over 81/100 on metacritic, but most importantly, we always agreed on the fact AT LEAST 20 scores from major publications had to be taken into consideration. KD3 is basically one of the least reviewed rap album ever.

As for LIG, you also only name 1 publication... However, Metacritic does End of the Year Top 10 Lists Compilations each year, they basically list the albums most frequently mentioned by individual music publications in their year-end Top Ten lists, there's often between 100 and 300 professional lists taken into consideration.
AOTY was Frank Ocean, followed by Good Kid maad City by Kendrick Lamar, and the only other rap album in the top 10 comes at #10 and is RAP by Killer Mike.

Like Elliott Wilson said, Life Is Good got forgotten years ago and didn't really got any high praise on end year lists.

In 2022 the only hip hop album with more than 20 reviews is Mr. Morale, and a lot of albums have less than 10 :

I think over the years there have been less and less reviewers for music album it seems.

In 2012, 7 albums in the top 10 had more than 20 reviews, including LIG (30 reviews) and GKMC had 36 compared to 26 for Mr. Morale in 2022.
