The other day I was reading this

New book shares story about Shaq slapping Kobe during pickup run
I wish bean was still here so we can get a Doc on that Lakers 3 peat era. That shyt was Emmy worthy
Kobe s
I’m not talking about when Malone made a pass at Kobe’s wife. This happened at practice after he only took one shot in the first half against the Queens and somebody made comment in the paper. They got into it and it was looking like a repeat of him and Shaq but Phil stepped in before it escalated.
Phil knew Karl wasnt a big kid like Shaq. He was going to actually put hands on Kobe frfr

that's not the point. Kobe is dead. Let him rest. We all knew Kobe had a phony street persona back in the day. But dude was a kid. We all overcompensated when we were young. There's no need to even bring this story back up now that he's gone. Kobe grew out of that phase of his life like most young men do. That wasn't the man he was when he died. The whole article just comes off spiteful.

Dude wrote this book before Kobe passed. You're being reactionary.

Certain parts definitely do, but it doesn't even bother me. Bean was objectively flawed. :yeshrug: If anything, his growth makes his career more endearing. Most of the world reveres him, warts & all, and no amount of pot shots is changing that. They tried it with Colorado less than an hour after he died with his daughter.

It failed miserably.

What chance does this excerpt have? :yeshrug:

Imo the flaws with the book is that Kobe wouldn’t talk to Pearlman, Pearlman seems spiteful when talking about Kobe 90% of the time and, the one sided coverage he gave to the case in Colorado. If there was evidence that Kobe wasn’t guilty why not include that? The first story she gave was different from the one that was constantly repeated in the news and that’s detailed in the book.

It’s no secret who Kobe was when he was younger but this board isn’t mature enough for discussions like this. That’s why I feel excerpts being posted on here isn’t a good idea.

Nobody else on here’s read the book?

He was a basketball player he was judged but how hard he went on the court. :manny:

his toughness within the context of the game was very real. He was down for whatever whenever against whomever. But at practice tryna fight Shaq and Samaki, tryna be a rapper, tryna fight chris child’s and Reggie Miller, basicslly calling Karl Malone’s fade on live Tv....all of that was him just tryna be on some tough guy shyt cuz he probably felt like everyone around him was from tougher backgrounds than him. By the time he was like 25 he moved on from that

also Iverson was huge during that time too

Reading it now. Bought it less than five minutes ago because of this thread. Literally on the Prolouge. I can tell hes going to be going in on Kobe by reading it but to Pearlman's credit, it's well done.

Not what I wanted to read :francis:

But to be fair #8 Kobe wasnt nearly as well liked as the #24 Kobe. He was following Jordan's every step, but playing in an Allen Iverson world. Its hard to follow the GOAT and then not want ftp eel lesser/not as hard as a peer.

And whats with the shots with Sigel.:patrice:

I'm getting a lil :old: so maybe I dont remember, but what was fake about him? Or was that just a reference of his demeanor
It means kobe was trying to act tough like Sigel

This wasn't presented as an old article. The date at the top of the article says September 25th 2020. That shoulda been made clear :yeshrug:

Jeff Pearlman is a New York Times bestselling author who has written for Sports Illustrated, ESPN and The Athletic, among other outlets. His books include “Football for a Buck,” “Gunslinger” and “The Bad Guys Won!” This excerpt is from his latest book, “Three-Ring Circus: Kobe, Shaq, Phil, and the Crazy Years of the Lakers Dynasty,” which is available now.

the ether
Kobe was 22 when this shyt happened. And he apologized, sincerely. Let it be a narrative of growing up and learning from your mistakes rather than just stan war material.

“You’ve gotta fukk him up!” he says in his deep baritone. “fukk. Him. Up.”
I heard this in Shaq's voice and it's killing me. Why Shaq gotta be so obvious with the instigating. :deadrose:

He was 30 years old and a team leader when that happened too, way too old to be acting like that. :why:

Grown millionaires acting like teenagers on the street. :snoop:

He wrote this on Deadspin promoting the book. I've been a big fan of Pearlman's previous books but this really rubbed me the wrong way:

Not gonna read his shyt after that.
