Had a convo with a friend, and he was talking about Steph vs Kyrie. After the convo was over, it got me to thinking:

Kyrie was recruited by Duke, and was consensus top 5 in his class and Steph wasn't in the top 100 for some recruiting sites. He and Steph are very similar in terms of build and athleticism. Steph was the son of an NBA player, and highly skilled. None of the big programs recruited him and he ended up at Davidson.

How in the HECK did that happen? Any HS/CBB fans can recall back to those time frames and remember what happened?

Steph wasnt always 6'2, 6'3.
He caught a lucky growth spurt

Steph didn’t burst onto the national scene until his SOPHMORE year at Davidson. And even then, he was gonna be a late first rounder cause he was a skinny shooter who didn’t project well anywhere else. He had a pg’s body but no one thought he could run the point. He literally went back for his junior year to prove that he could be a point.

Steph was okay but he didn't become elite until he restructured his jumpshot, which I believe was after his senior year of high school. He said himself that if he went to Virginia Tech he wouldn't have been given an opportunity to showcase his skills and get better.

Curry significantly improved. Nobody saw Steph being All-Time great while he was in college. He was always a great shooter but not the best ever while in school.

Steph is a classic example of a late bloomer, but With Dell Curry being the best player ever to come out of Virginia Tech you would think his son would at least get a chance to walk on there but Seth Greenberg thought differently :francis:
.When Kyrie transferred into st. Patrick's his junior year and prior to the season starting Kevin Boyle said that Kyrie had a chance to be the best guard to ever come out of Jersey a lot of people paid close attention. When Kyrie played well during the season but then went beast mode during AAU season the hype was through the roof after that.
He did get a walkon offer, he didn't get a scholarship.

Steph had a late growth spurt. He wasn't 6'2 out of HS. He was 6'0 barefoot. He grew to 6'2 barefoot his freshman year. He was mainly a SG. Kyrie was a PG with advanced scoring skills and ability. Steph looked great in HS but in AAU, he struggled and his HS comp wasn't much to write about. Kyrie played for the best HS in America and was one of the best camp players as well. Kyrie killed it at every level to this point. Steph didn't at that time do that. Steph just kept improving a lot and his BBIQ was just much better than scouts thought. Some players are AAU players and some aren't. Steph was one who flat out wasn't one.

The most interesting thing about these dudes is, neither one of them looked like they'd be playing professional sports as seniors. They look like regular, square dudes. Derrick Rose, for instance, looked like an athlete without moving a muscle. Same with John Wall. Chris Paul is similar to Kyrie and Steph in that they look waaay too much like regular dudes to be one of the absolute best in the world.
Ain't nothing regular about Kyrie ability, skills, talent, and athletic ability. CP3 is an athletic, strength, skill, and talent marvel and Steph is just unstoppable at every level to match his shooting gifts.

The problem is everyone buys into the Highschool mixtape hype/promo train

Anyone who watched Curry closely at Davidson knew what he had potential to be in the NBA.

It’s just people would rather find reasons to doubt him and bank on “sure things” in the draft like size and athleticism.

But like someone said the nba draft and lottery is all luck and surface based.

Nobody knew what kind of character and inner drive was motivating curry to be great

Also he got into the NBA as it was kinda changing and becoming more 3 pointer focused

I’d say in a way the NBA and warriors changed to encourage Curry’s style of play.

But even before that He was always considered one of the best shooters. and that’s enough to get you in the nba and stay on a team

He kept improving all other aspects of his game and now he’s a 2 time MVP

Kyries been great from day 1 in the league but I don’t think he’s improved as drastically as Curry. I don’t even think he was ever expected to.

But he’s always been promoted as the more exiciting and marketable one.

In that aspect nothing has changed from Highschool, to college and the NBA

I watched Curry closely and while he was an excellent ballplayer. As I freshman, I didn't see NBA player. As a sophomore, I seen it but I didn't know his position and seen him as a Dana Barros type. His Jr year, you knew he could be a NBA starter but he didn't look like a potential superstar. He just kept get much better, year after year after year. Nothing else to it. We seen this with Westbrook. Late bloomers just grow like weeds. Look at Giannis.

Kyrie was realms more hyped from what I've read before college. Mainly because Curry wasnt hyped at all lol. I dont know how he was viewed shooting wise, but in the late 2000s, just being a great stationary shooter (I dont think he had the off the dribble aspect down) with a mediocre handle, bad physical stats and bad defense wasnt giving you much love. I think someone could come with the exact game Curry had coming into college and probably viewed more favorably these days.

It’s F’d up to say but ya’ll both right to a degree

You can’t scout talent off physical appearance.. but I’m training camp Sumer camp and try- outs apparently they make you play pick up games and train shirt off

:dame:

To see your physique , body-fat how your body reacts by putting those sensor patches
(Whatever you call them) on your body and calculating your activity.

As far as kyrie even with that foot problem that kept him sideline in college all I needed to see was a couple game of him in the tourney to know he a gamer.I had an argument with my cuz because he ain’t believe me that ky was gonna go no 1 because he only played a few games .. I was like you see his poise .. off the glass shots .. and moves ..he plays like a vet and this is baby food to him.

With curry i had the same argument with my cuz when he tried to say Paul George was better ... it was the same year curry got snubbed for an all-star nod I was telling him he’s the truth he wasn’t hearing me that same time he was torching NY for buckets ... my cuz had to pay homage

True say I was already schooled by @Houston911 ..sohh for those who don’t know he posted a clip of Bobby Knight breaking down Steph’s game and why he will be great in the league and comparing him to Nash. I remember @Houston911 saying he’ll be better than Nash ...and steph ain’t even touch an nba flooor yet officially.
