On June 24, 2023, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy named Trevor James Kirk was caught on camera throwing a Black woman to the ground and pepper-spraying her outside a WinCo grocery store in Lancaster, California.567 The incident occurred while the deputy was attempting to detain a man and a woman suspected of shoplifting. The woman was recording the arrest on her phone when the deputy approached her and forcibly threw her to the ground.56
Following the incident, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department launched an internal investigation and released body camera footage of the event.567 The department reassigned the two deputies involved from field duty pending an administrative review.56
In February 2025, Trevor James Kirk was found guilty of excessive force and faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.7 The incident was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Kirk's sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 21, 2025.
