I agree with Lebron James wholeheartedly. Most people don't understand the background story of HK and what's currently going on there. It's bigger than human rights abuses and it has more to do with territorial integrity and realpolitik. It's easy to follow a narrative about evil China, when China is doing what it can do to protect itself and continue its exponential growth, as the world gradually moves into a bipolar one.
Every region/country is different and "democracy" as it's in the west isn't going to work everywhere. Certain countries need hardliners to reach their full potentials. But once they get there, they will naturally take a softer stance. That's how evolution works. China's hardline style of governance is what got the country to where it's today. People forget China also tried the western style of democracy for decades with puppets and western countries pillaging its resources and all it got back was anarchy, deaths of millions, poverty, diseases and underdevelopment - until Maoism began. With Maoism, if you've to kill a few hundreds bad eggs to save millions and enable the normal progression - it's a choice you have to take. And that has worked pretty well for China in the last four decades.
Europe where "democracy" was birthed was like that for centuries until post world wars when it needed a new trajectory, to maintain its population, due to the millions of people that died during those world wars. And everything became more controlled without the hardline approach.
If Morey really cared about freedom, charity has to begin at home.
