Let's talk about how the south lowered the standard of lyricism in hip hop...

Let's take a dude like Serious Jones for example (even tho he's from Jersey...but NYC claims Jersey when they want to)
Bars/Punchlines for Days, could murk any freestyle on any DJ's mixtape.

but couldn't make a radio single...much less a normal song to save his life.

that was the case for about 90% of them dudes.

Agreed...

i had completely given up on the new south until big krit and freddie gibbs popped up...then again, it's not like we're pushing out a ton of inredible mc's here in the east either. the west pretty much has it on lock for new talent. shiit, it's not like mc eiht is new either, but dude definetly stepped his spit game up on that last release. i wasn't expecting anything near that level. it's always tough to capture great lyricism and song writing capabilites into one artist. 2pac was a prime example of that...

what the hell does somebody saying it doesnt matter what the artist is saying, and his or subject matter doesnt matter mean to you exactly?

Quality and subject matter do not go hand in hand.

There are plenty of songs that are rich in subject matter that sound like shyt and vice versa.

A song like Swimming Pools is rich in subject matter and quality. I promise you the people in the club dancing to it don't care about the underlying meaning(subject matter). They just like the way it sounds(this is what a quality song is, some shyt that sounds good)

This is almost like the chicken/egg argument.

While something can be said for rap as a whole being party music, the south's simple flow styles didn't obviously highlight their rise, it was the beats and hooks. I think people saw this and ran with it, and then NY copied along w/ other regions and here we are.

Saw what you may about subject matter and everything, just people having good and complex flows died off. :manny: I think it just goes with time. In the early 80's things were simple, Kool Moe Dee and the Treacherous Three weren't out to be lyrical gods, but then Rakim ushered in a new era and people realized they better come correct, even on the West, as hard as the beats were, some of the flows were just :whew:. That too has passed and the slower, simple era is reigning.
