You should have realized that rap music is party music 1st and foremost and always will be.

If you can't respect artist being able to get a whole club moving no matter the region then rap isn't for you

I have no problem with party music, the problem is thats been the exclusive focus for a majority of rappers, and the popularity of rap has diminished because of it. I mean, rappers dont have any other interests and ways to express their art? Who wants to listen to dumb rap 24/7?

Diversity in the genre benefits all, because people have different interests. Kendrick blowing up so hard is testament to people being hungry for a thoughtful MC, with a range of topics and interests. But the rap game continues to focus on appealing to the lowest common denominator, while shutting out more mature fans.

What you mean the popularity of rap has diminished?

Kendrick blew up because he makes great songs.

Swimming pools is a club song

bytch don't kill my vibe is something people groove to every time it comes on

And money trees is something people dance to when the beat drops. Same thing with poetic justice

Kendrick isn't deviating from the formula that you say all rappers are following

I said Kendrick has a broad range of topics and interests, not that he doesnt make a club track or two. That said, swimming pools is hardly a formulaic standard club track.

And rap has experienced a fairly steep decline in sales and popularity. No other genre has dipped as much rap in the past couple of years. People are just growing weary over listening to the same cliched focus on materialism, drugs, and the club. Even tho he was able to tap into white privilege, its no coincidence that the biggest rap song of the year was a dude talking about shopping at the thrift store. Its relatable and human.

Bruh, rap music is more popular then ever.

You can not measure popularity based on record sales. Especially rap which has always been the most bootlegged.

I'm pretty sure Wayne and Drake got the most money from Pandora last year.

lol...no it isnt. Drake is popular, rap is not. Stop making excuses. Not only have rap sales fallen off a cliff as a whole, but EDM has almost completely cornered the market with the dumb, party club crowd. Most clubs in Vegas dont even play rap at all. Thats what happens when you focus on a fickle base.

:dafukk: you're counting clubs that don't cater to a hiphop audience and is always chasing what's pop?

Listen to the song again.

I know he is denouncing binge drinking and peer pressure

But, the beat, sing song hook, the opening catch phrase (poor up,drink) all of this is tailor made to be a song that makes the club rock.

The real meaning to the song matters none

why not....the topic is the popularity of rap, correct? Or are we just not going to include things that work against your argument? These clubs were playing rap, exclusively 2-3 years ago. Now they dont play it all, and these are the biggest clubs in the country. This is a trend developing around the country as well.

I'm not sure about that. Pandora isn't set up like Commercial radio is as far as what mechanical royalties you receive from airplay. Totally different structure.

A good amount of clubs in South FL have converted to a mostly EDM club. Mansions in Miami was THE Hip Hop spot for a few years. It's mostly now EDM and ironically threw off DJ Shadow who's a world renown DJ, but didn't play enough "Commercial" EDM :comeon:

He claims that popular artists such as Adele, Jason Aldean and Wiz Khalifa are making more than $1 million every year, while some -- like Drake and Lil Wayne -- are raking in almost $3 million annually.

Pandora Reveals How Much It Pays Artists, Claims Drake, Lil Wayne Rake In $3 Million A Year

This is very telling. Drake and Wayne make 3 times off of the most popular music service right now then the last Artist in this country.

Ok let's say you're right.

The reasoning sure as hell isn't because they are tired of the subject matter in hiphop

Of course its the reason.

How popular do you think the movie business would be if they just put out dumb, blow em up Michael Bay action blockbusters every week, to the exclusion of every other type of movie? No, you have action movies, comedies, dramas, romantic, artsy, etc.

Other genres in music have a range of interests and topics as well (except for EDM, and thats why its a fad genre that comes and goes), especially country which is why it has such an enduring popularity. Its only rap that wants to hit this consistent one-dimensional note of bugattis and molly, and the genre is starting to really suffer now. This is undeniable.
