Dude makes the franchise relevant and they go the playoffs consistently and he performs consistently and stay healthy for the most part. Outside of winning a chip, which would take more than just him, what more can you really ask for? Not to mention no one is coming to Portland, so if you get your hands on a guy of his caliber, you lock him down ASAP for as long as possible.

We put small and mid-market teams in a no-win situation with this shyt.

When they draft well and develop players who end up wanting to stay, we kill em for signing them to big-money contracts (as though they had any other choice).

When they let those players walk, we call em stupid and remind them that "nobody wants to go to [city X]" (as though the front office didn't already know that).

When they try a full reset to accumulate draft picks and build for the future, we trash em for tanking.

This next round of CBA negotiations should be interesting.
