i voted minstrel show. arrangement, production, concept, were all executed perfectly on that album, and lyrically its not a step down from the listening. they both on the same level. minstrel show just got that entertainment value.
The Listening without question. Minstrel show was nice but the whole feel and vibe to The Listening was so soulful and authentic. That album defined a certain period in my life. The only JL related album on The Listening's level is Foreign Exchange-Connected
I chose The Listening, but it's not taking away from the Minstrel Show. It's like the Infamous and Hell on Earth, both dope as hell albums, you can't go wrong with choosing one over the other.
I never liked Minstrel Show & it kinda made me stop fukking with them. I actually think it might be something to do with the mastering cuz it honestly just sounds flat & off-putting to my ears. They also were way extra bitter seeming with it, whereas on The Listening they seemed more well-adjusted, and less serious bout their hating (& seemed more concerned with clarifying that they WERENT your typical "underground lyrically lyrical/poetry slam/backpack" types).
My favorite part of the Minstrel Show was the Percy Miracles track, -- cause unlike the rest the album it was actually done with a good sense of humor. Then Phonte went all butthurt & killed that off too...
"Speed" "Too Far Away From Me" & "Yo Yo" will forever be classics.
Both are classic albums, and it's almost a perfect tie, but I would give a slight edge to the Minstrel Show in terms of albums. The Listening flowed better as a complete album, but the standouts on the Minstrel Show blow out mostly anything a rapper has done in the last decade. But Chitlin Circuit 1.5>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
