On some real shyt, this thread is nothing but a low key brag thread about how you save money and youren't into shyt other people are into.

Who to say these people that y'all are castigating aren't enjoying life as much as y'all?

Honestly, in my opinion, the only reason I such a good saver is because I don't really enjoy life...

I am not suicidal...I go to school full time and I work full time, and I enjoy making beats on FL Studio...

But every time I want to buy something, a voice in my head just says "Are you really going to spend all that money on something that was made in China for probably $20 dollars?"

I have no interest to possess anything...One the reasons is also because of of the movie "Heat"...

When Deniro says "Don't get attached to anything you are not willing to leave in 30 seconds when the heat is around the corner" or something along that line...

Ever since then, I have been training my brain to have no attachments or give any meaning to anything material...

I used to be so irresponsible with money when I was in college.:snoop: I didn't grow up with a lot of money, so when I started working I didn't know what to do with it. It's taken me a couple years of living on my own to really get a grasp on proper budgeting, as well as focusing on spending my money on things that truly matter to me. Besides food, water, and shelter, I designate a good portion of my income to travelling, entertainment, and related expenses. Like a lot of you have said, creating good memories is a lot more important to me than having a lot of "stuff."

Yeah but the idea is that when you spend the money on those items, they get old, then you want new items.

Memories last forever and don't depreciate. And not every memory is a vacation, it could be a night out to comedy club with a friend or going to see a sporting event with your family.

I`m not telling people what to enjoy, some people like collecting things. Personally that does nothing for me. Want that new Iphone? shyt is new for 6 months then it's old and you`ll be wanting the new-new. It's an endless cycle
I like experiences and things so I'm definitely a believer of stepping your game up so you can enjoy whatever you want whether its experiences, things, or both. I also think memories are cool but they are also things that you just talk about every now and then not daily or nothing like that. Its a cool thing when your chillin with friends but in the normal day to day I don't even think about them like that and thats real so I look at them kinda the same. Not saying or telling others how to think just speaking on how I look at the two.

I was getting my nails done the other day and there was this chick in there talking loud, she had her LV bag, a Ipad, her long hair. She on the phone talking about how she got this and that and I just look at her and smile. As I leave I see her standing at the bus stop. Funniest shyt ever. Anyway, I learned my lesson years ago.

I personally don't think experiences vs. materials matters. Its personal preference, different people value different things. Buy what you want, just make sure you are saving enough to fall back on should anything happen.

I live below my means.

The only time I spend a substantial amount on stuff is when I know that I will maximize it's value or use. Priorities are clear in my head.

I'm the type of person that would much rather have the funds to do things that I'll remember than to have stuff to flaunt around

I'd rather take vacations and create memories with the fam.

I try to have a high standard, (on a scale I'm comfortable with) for things, but I don't want to max out costs for rent, bills, entertainment like some of friends my age, who are constantly broke, asking to borrow a 100$, but drive moderately expensive cars, live in a penthouse condo and are in the club 4 nights a week with bottles.

Good thread. I'm cheap as hell too, well not cheap but cautious. I've had to TEACH my wife about the value of a dollar. I work 4 days a week, ten plus hour days. What the hell do I need a closet full of clothes for? I saved 20k in my first two years at comcast, when I bought my first house. I don't need any of that stuff anymore man. I've trained and learned to separate my needs from wants. Educating a dumb woman on the value of money isn't easy, be mindful. I'm as basic as basic can get

TBH, the hardest person to cope with on this is my dad. In my family we were always raised to think that status matters and the size of your house MATTERS and what kind of car you drive defines you and whatnot. Now don't get me wrong I like nice shyt and I do want a big ass house but living that day-to-day life for appearances is straight garbage. Or maybe I'd just rather have money in the bank than a bunch of baller shyt. Or hell, maybe I'm just cheap. Who knows.

Anyone else live well beneath their means?
Strangely enough my dad is the one person in my life who can't move past the concept of status. I understand why he does it- he literally came from nothing, made it out and did big things, but is just another face in the crowd in the US. His money is all fukked up off of that status shyt... hes damn near 70 with a $5K/month mortgage
My dad is the exact opposite. Dude is about as cheap as it gets and he rarely buys things for himself. He bought a pair of Starburys a few years ago for $8 and it looks like he is going to wear those boys until the soles fall off. He's had the same cell phone for 10 years and he saved up pretty much all of his vacation time from work (he only took time off to watch me or my brother play sports).

Even though his cheapness is annoying sometimes, I can't be angry at him. We never had to worry about bills or groceries, and he never hesitated to spend money on me or my siblings if we needed something. None of us have loans from undergrad since he saved enough to pay for everything that wasn't covered through scholarships. He's got no debt and his credit is outstanding so I was able to get a great deal on my car loan with him as a cosigner.

I don't take it as far as him but I definitely focus on living below my means too. It would be really easy to blow my savings but I'm always focusing on making sure my bills are paid (and worrying that I've got enough money to last me for a few months in case I get fired). I like spending money on nice things, but I feel better knowing I've got money in my account for when things go wrong. I'm still trying to find that balance.
