This.

As well, given the current racially charged climate of the American landscape with Barack Obama heading towards his last year in the white house, seemingly endless shootings of unarmed black men and women by police who don't even see any sort of criminal retribution for their acts, growing racial disparities in wealth and in the job market, it's kind of natural that people (especially black people) would see some sort of issue with this given Common's recent comments.

Yes. I know we should just "lighten up" and "stop complaining" in you're eyes and you think our type are "miserable" for actually pointing out the existence of these problems in our social sphere...but you know what...I'm just going to say it, the behavior exhibited in this thread by some of the posters in it is not only bizarre but disheartening.

I don't even get this country anymore. Okay....it's just like because we see common donning a wig and singing a Lionel Richie song or because we see black men and women on TV and in Movies it's like racism on a wide scale never happened and doesn't happen. Like all the events of the past couple of years never happened. I don't even know anymore.

Tbh. I think I'm going to have to take a break from these forums cause this is legit depressing to see the "stop talking about race/if you do you are a militant/you must live a miserable existence/you post this for daps/blah blah blah" talk from black folk on here. Sometimes I just feel like giving up cause it's obvious you already have :snoop:. When is caring about self preservation a "bad" trait?
Cuz y'all bytch about every fukking thing. Ya'll wanna see nikka do ignorant shyt and just kill some white folk huh?

Counter-productive ass nikkas

All I see is a grown ass man doing what the fukking he wants to do. It's not that fukking serious. fukk common but this outrage is fake as fukk.

Anybody gotta problem, suck my dikk come see me them. Sick of you fukk nikkas

Hammer IS a hip hop legend. Talk about rewriting history. Hammer only blew up mainstream wise because he was getting love from the hood. The hood fukked with Hammer....at first. We/blacks originally appreciated Hammer for what he was. A cat that made catchy shyt who could dance his ass off. We turned on Hammer once the mainstream got on to him and propped him up as a representation off hip hop. Hammer was out here going diamond off of his little dance/pop records while real talented mcs kicking that real shyt were struggling to go gold and getting no mainstream recognition. If Hammer would've never blown up he would have never got that hate/backlash. You can't deny that Hammer has his lane and hip hop tho. Dude is an undeniable part of my childhood and cats acting like he was always hated and shat on by the hip hop crowd is laughable and that's the real re-writing of history.

If it's not that serious then why are you throwing a hissy fit? It's serious enough for you to whine like a bytch. Your feminine ass is on the Internet issuing idle threats to ppl you don't know over their opinions while saying "@@&"@&$ "it's that serious". Go sit sit your bytchass in a corner somehwere and count to 10.

You don't know hip hop as well as you think you do. Dancing around the stage was actually always part of hip hop from the beginning. That's actually part of the roots of it. All the old school rappers had dance routines. Even LL. Even the hardcore gangsta ones. Big Daddy Kane used to get down. Hip Hop has always been about performing. Common has been break dancing since he first came out. I your concerned about rappers not performing for white audiences and not "selling out" or keeping it real your about 25 years late breh.

And besides its not like they were up their lip syncing to the Beatles or something. Hammer and Lionel Richie are black musical legends my friend. Nothing wrong with them paying respect and having fun with it.

Smh you missed his entire point and focused on dancing like we didn't know that's an element of hip hop smh

yall so scared of what white people think about you that you're losing your grasp of the history and culture of your own people. it's sad to see and pretty damn pathetic. Dude dresses as a legendary black musician, incorporates a black created dance, all as part of a show, and it's bad just because white people are watching? do white peoples opinions govern your psyche THAT much?

40 years olds jumping around, lip syncing, and looking silly to show white people "I'm not the pro black common " anymore is not apart of black culture

You have a lot of great points, particularly about making artistically great party music, but I think you're being a bit unfair to Hammer.

He has this track:

I was practically raised on Hammer and a bunch of other shyt at that time. And not the corny Hammer shyt like "Addams Groove". I'm talking about shyt like "It's All Good" when he tried to make 'real' music, and was totally ignored [for good reason too, his stuff was nowhere near as good as the best of 1994].

This was and still is my favorite Hammer track hands fukking down. One of the very first hip hop songs I remember loving. Mostly because of how hard the beat went and the chorus. Was anyone in hip hop even saying "it's all good" before Hammer did? His wiki is trying to claim credit for it. I can tell you I'd never heard that phrase before till Hammer said it. My dad and I added it to our everyday speech. If it is true, then you gotta give Hammer a little credit.

Hammer also had a track with James Brown. Dude was a sellout but there have been worse sellouts since.

Breh....people were clowning the shyt out of Hammer for that video (and album) because he went hardcore over night.

The sweet spot for Hammer's career was late 80's/early 90's. I dunno how old you are but he was never seen as a legend back then, even before people thought he was a huge sell out. People liked a couple of his songs, that's about it.

And Mac Mall was saying it's all good before Hammer:

Yeah I know that now but I didn't know that back then. I was 10 in 1994. I liked Hammer as a kid but grew out of it by 96/97. I've always wondered why the vitriol for Hammer, because he wasn't always wack. In the early stages he was somewhat respected, then went on to sell the fukk out before trying to come back to his roots. You have cats that sell out and never come back. And also, Hammer was fluff rap just like Tag Team and 69 Boyz. I don't see anyone actively hating on them, despite the fact that they never made 'cultural rap' and I never go out of my way to hear their shyt.

I'm not defending Hammer's catalogue as something respectable. I'm just saying I think he catches a little too much hate, especially in hindsight of how hip hop turned out e.g. rappers selling the fukk out by the dozen.

I appreciate you dropping the knowledge though and schooling a young breh like myself. That's the thing about older cats - they can provide invaluable context. Thanks for posting the track too.
