Looking back, NBA stars were 1 dimensional as **** prior to MJ

LOL I meant to put in my last post that saying this shyt out loud doesnt even sound right.

You call it foolish when I'm saying there was damn near no pressure for them to be "complete" players on the defensive end.

Barkley got ZERO media scrutiny for playing no D. Same with a lot of players back then. You apply today's standards on those dudes, they'd sell them short about their game until they won a ship.

I don't care how right or not right it sounds.

:skip: Whatever scrutiny they faced if they played today, it wouldn't be for being 1 dimensional. Thats just not the correct term. I get what you're trying to say tho. But IMO there are only a handful of 2-Way players in the league and only 1 elite 2 way player in Lebron.

To his credit, Magic is #17 on the all time steals list. That means he made good defensive plays as most of em probably came from playing the passing lanes. Thats a skill and makes him a good defender. People get caught up in dudes not being great 'ON BALL' defenders and then get labeled as bad defenders. And Magic could effectively guard multiple positions. It's time Earvin got his props on the other end of the floor too! LOL

Barkley's one on one defense was largely ignored, but he was also one the GOAT rebounders which is a huge part of defense.

My main beef with Melo is because he's one dimensional in the sense that he only does one thing at an elite level (score). His freshman year at Syracuse he looked like a much better all around player who didn't need to drop 25 in order to dominate/have an impact. Nowadays if his shot isn't on he struggles to impact the game in a positive way. And his effort on the defensive end is often non-existent, nobody's asking him to be Artest or Tony Allen, but when he consistently fails to close out on shooters, or box out that's a problem.

Charles himself said he sucked ass defensively. I don't think rebounds indicate playing good defense. David Lee is a volume rebounder that can't guard worth shyt.

No argument with that, Chuck couldn't guard his shadow, but defense is more than just guarding your man. Think how different that Miami/Indy series would be if Bosh could rebound like Barkley or even Reggie Evans.

chill homie, thats fam

Dog....I'm a Lakers fan from the 80's, walking to school with "it's not luck, it's Magic" bootleg t shirts.

Why would I lie about that?

Michael Adams was KILLING Magic and the Lakers back in 89 and 90.

That midget dropped 31 on Magic and anyone guarding him back in 90!!!

Michael was a beast those few years....

Nique was my favorite player along with Magic in the 80s....and neither of them were a jack of trades, taking it to the defensive end. Only centers were expected to try to bring both. Brad Daughrety was shytted on for not bringing any D.

LOL @ the Chinese basketball team running iso's on old Nique in one of those international games.

Seriously though....the Ice Man, Alex English, Adrian Dantely and a lot of those players were one dimensional as fukk....just pure offense. They didn't get bashed for not bringing it on the defensive end like a lot of these dudes today.

MJ really set the bar on what it is to be considered a dominant wing player.

Most players still are for the most part. It is almost impossible to give it your all on both ends of the floor night in and night out....

However, MJ had a period where he did it on both ends, and so did Kobe to a degree...Outside of those 2, who else can you name besides maybe 2 or 3 more guys

You're 100% right. But outside of big men, whenever you're approaching elite status offensively as a wing player post MJ, if you aren't doing it on the other side of the ball and didn't win a ship, you're slighted for not being a good defender.

Yeah. I've been seeing that over the last 5 years or so.

I don't think it should tarnish a player's legacy if they were great offensive guys but poor defenders, but maybe its the new requirement to be considered "great" by the media now.....
