Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz didn't make a dime off "Deja Vu"

It's a shame that an artist like Steely Dan is so happy to screw another artist out of everything. And yeah, I say screwed, because something like this for Steely Dan was "found money." They deserved a cut, a large one in fact, but could've shared some of the pie.

And they won't even let them perform it live? That's just some "let me stab you and then twist the knife" stuff.

Shaq didn't fukk with them until they blew up.

Gunz and Tariq were all over You Can't Stop the Reign, which came out in 1996 before this song hit in 1998. Gunz was on 3 songs and Tariq was on 2.

(My mistake, this was already addressed, skipped right by it somehow.)

Takin' the entire 100 % is too much. And I believe that sampled artists deserve to be compensated (especially when it comes to beats), but a law should regulate these sorts of anomalies. I think a 70-30 % division would be more than enough fair, considering the fact that the artists who sample also create free publicity for bands/artists that were probably long forgotten by the industry itself.

Y'knoow. Publishing, writing credits & then on top like 150k? Damn. What he said about the Puff situation made sense to me. Think that's why they demanded so much since they expected to make that off it once Puff ran with it. Puff was obviously 1 of the biggest acts out in 1997 so i think they somehow compensated by taking so much from Tariq & Pete.

Wtf Lol they sampled a well known #1 salsa hit that was still hitting airwaves on La Mega 97.9 and they didn't clear that sample?

fukk were they thinking :heh:

never even knew that, and while Black Cow may seem like some obscure record to young black/inner city youths, that was a HUGE song for Steely Dan. they werent exactly a top 40 band, but that was one of their signature hits. the handling of this song was so botched that its comical

So them not clearing the sample wasn't a big fukk you to steely dan or whomever? How do you respond when someone's says "fukk you"? Break me off with cash?

And Puff wouldn't give a shyt either, because his job was to:

a) clear the sample
b) screw his own artists for publishing and royalties, so it was a win-win for him either way

All is a part of a big machinery...Gunz and Tariq were just collateral damage.

Hold on. You CANT take samples. Vanilla Ice had to pay Sting. The writing credits was just like salt in the wound IMO. NY fools stay dumb though.
I think the salt in the wound was them having to pay Steely Dan 100k and give them all the publishing from the song. It's one thing to give them all the publishing but they had to give them 100k just to accept all the publishing for a hit record :scust:

Classic Song. Top 10 single, #1 on the rap and Singles chart, Platinum single. The album flopped too. Sad what happen but they should of built off that track. Lord Tariq was a hard emcee. Honestly the album was all over the place. They had some bangers on there but it just wasn't a good album. It was decent. "Deja Vu" was a Classic single though. But you can't be mad at Steely Dan. It's his song and they sampled it period. Also "Black Crow" is one of his biggest albums, the fact they thought they could get away with that is there own arrogance. Yes it may have been the Label's fault for not getting the sample cleared but the producer and the artist know it's a sample.

Sampling is apart of Hip Hop DNA and bloodstream but you have to give credit. I'm all for sampling but the original artist must be acknowledge. One great thing about Hip Hop is it has exposed me to many different genre and music just by researching the samples. Get samples cleared, you don't go and make a video or make something a single if you didn't get it cleared. Drake did that with "Best I Ever Had" and had to pay big money. I'm sorry they just have to take that L. It just stings more cause they never got another hit after that but I do like Lord Tariq, he's done joints with Big, NaS and Jay. But that single will always bring back memories for me. Pun and Clef in the video too:
