I've been complaining about anti-intellectualism since the Bush years, but it seems like its only gotten worse in the 2010s. Maybe I'm some sort of elitist or something, but I honestly can't help but feel like people in general are stupider than they were, say, in the 90s when I was a kid. Even outside of the Trump shyt, back then I don't remember-

  • Any significant amount of people believing the earth was flat (you'd be laughed out the room)
  • Extreme climate change denial
  • Antivaxxers even being a thing
  • People being anti-science/pro-religion like that
  • Etc

Even have some friends/family members believing in nonsense that, at least as far as I know, weren't like that back in the day and seemed a lot more rational.

So what's the deal? Is it because of the Internet? Youtube? Are people getting dumber? Maybe I'm just some sort of snobby elitist for feeling this way? Maybe I just didn't notice because I was young at the time? Just wondering if anybody else has this perspective. But it honestly seems like people in general are dumber and more irrational than they were 10 or 20 years ago, and willfully so.

I don't think you're being an elitist snob necessarily,either that or I am too.

I think the amount of information the average person has access to now is purely overwhelming. That issue combined with the need to express an opinion on EVERY topic causes people to rush to make uninformed opinions. Think about how many people read headlines and formulate opinions without ever reading the content of a story. I also believe that information overload is negatively impacting the average attention span, which only complicates things further.

It’s not the whole world either, it’s America. I believe it started around the time of 911. “Oh we blame Afghanistan” (opioid capital of the world), deregulated big pharm, few years later it’s an opioid crisis- no one makes the connection.
The xenophobia began to pick up then all the critical thinking left the room by the time the “Great Recession” hit.
Now it’s the “illegals”. Same mfs hooping n hollering is the same mfs that own companies full of Mexicans. When’s the last time u seen a construction company with ALL white employees? All these cacs in Congress have Mexican nannys, landscapers, maids, babysitters, mechanics etc.

The internet has put us in a permanent crowd mentality, I think. In the 90s, pre internet, people focused on local things that were around them. They watched the national news for a half hour every night, and maybe read the newspaper, but otherwise were more focused on what was going on in their house, their neighborhood, their community. And, those were things they actually knew about, and could talk rationally about.


Now everyone is shouting on the internet about things they know literally nothing about....makes us look stupid. I mean, look at something simple like the NBA offseason. All these reporters look stupid with their wrong hot takes about Kawhi, then we all yell based off their wrong hot take. No one knew what the fukk we were talking about, but we all had opinions.

Quick anecdote:
My therapist used to do IQ tests on the side and she said she used to think people were flat out mentally retarded but over time realized that’s just the average person as their scores were the average for the US.

With 330+ Million people it’s not far fetched that most will be dumb
