People aren’t getting stupider.

The problem is bad voices being raised to the top because of the internet. That, along with schools getting worse thanks to lack of real goals and the rise of charter schools.
How do charter schools, make traditional schools worse? :dwillhuh:

Anti-intellectualism definitely seems to be at an all time high. We have all this access to technology and information, but people aren't utilizing it for the right purposes. Education isn't valued as much as it used to or should I say should be.

But to be frank, America is not filled with the brightest crayons in the box. There's a loud majority of idiots drowning out the silent minority of those so educated and intellectual yet so unsure of themselves. It is Idiocracy. We are living in it.

I thought this would happen a bit later on in the 21st century and not right now though...that shyt is kind of a buzzkill.

High-key not an American problem
And this country keeps on getting smoked by indian, asian, and african immigrants in education.
And European countries put more of a focus on education as affordable obtainable.
College is so expensive these days in this country and many end up in tens if not hundreds of thousands of debt.
Public schools can only do so much.
Private and Charter schools are expensive as well and unobtainable for many.
I wouldn't say it's exclusive to America, but like many things, America does it well.

We want people to be comfortable even if they don't have an education... not sure how we expect to fair against countries and students from countries where getting an education is the difference between eating and starving.

It's capitalism's fault. The need for corporations to increase shareholder wealth every quarter leads to a narrow focus and causes companies to pander to mankind's lower instincts.
We are also a young country compared to others, they been around thousands of years us only a few hundred so they learned more tangible historical lessons on how shyt can go left with unbridled capitalism.

Social media was a major part of it of dumbing down people, but the trick was they feel more informed. Most people I know, and I run in some wide circles from very affluent to very low, don't know much about anything, outside their personal lives. it gets slightly better the further up the socioeconomic scale you go, sadly, on both counts.

...stupid?:francis:

I've been complaining about anti-intellectualism since the Bush years, but it seems like its only gotten worse in the 2010s. Maybe I'm some sort of elitist or something, but I honestly can't help but feel like people in general are stupider than they were, say, in the 90s when I was a kid. Even outside of the Trump shyt, back then I don't remember-

  • Any significant amount of people believing the earth was flat (you'd be laughed out the room)
  • Extreme climate change denial
  • Antivaxxers even being a thing
  • People being anti-science/pro-religion like that
  • Etc

Even have some friends/family members believing in nonsense that, at least as far as I know, weren't like that back in the day and seemed a lot more rational.

So what's the deal? Is it because of the Internet? Youtube? Are people getting dumber? Maybe I'm just some sort of snobby elitist for feeling this way? Maybe I just didn't notice because I was young at the time? Just wondering if anybody else has this perspective. But it honestly seems like people in general are dumber and more irrational than they were 10 or 20 years ago, and willfully so.
No we're no more dumb than we use to be 20 years ago.

What you are feeling is due to two things.

You are grown now. So the veneer for adults is being wiped away by the moment(especially due to the internet).
it's like realizing your parents are people too not just your parents. meaning, they at some point made DUMB moves too and did stupid stuff just like you. they are and have always been humans too. but you looked up to your parents(as you should) and you looked up to adults in general( as you should as a kid.)

But then you grow up to realize a lot of adults in high positions are not that smart. this is hard to realize and i'm not sure its the adults fault or what. but we really thought everyone with a high position at a company or government MUST be smart. now we know otherwise. lets bring race into it. the older you get the more you realize white people under this system of white supremacy FAIL UP. This means you will have a ton of Meghan Mcain's running around in high positions just on the strength that they are white. literally no other logical reason for them to have ever received the promotion to begin with.

So imagine that X million.

So now lets add in the internets. The internet is not making us dumber do to info overload. what it is doing is two things. It's giving all the idiots of the world a platform to find all the other idiots and say "hey we can form a group of...idiots and dumb people." and that is making these type of people really think their bad ideas will work and are good ideas. all a human needs is someone to cosign their BS to think it dont stink. and thats what you have now with social media, internet chat groups, message boards, etc

lastly, the internet brings us all together around the globe. which is a great thing. but its a gift and a curse. the curse is, now you see other fully grown ups doing really STUPID dumb things ALL THE TIME. so imagine now you can see every mistake your parents ever made and add in they are in a group of other dummies doing other stupid things. This is why it looks WORSE than it has been. it has always been this bad its just now you can clearly see it and see it a lot and see it in groups.

Your perception was not afforded the ability to see as much pre internet and pre adulthood.

Great post. Just to add on, most adults are aware people fail upward and hold positions they don't deserve, BUT they still treat the occurrence as an anomaly. They still generally think most people get where they are thru merit and bow to their authority.

I'd agree with the general notion that a large portion of the population has always been irrational and would point to religion as evidence of this. People have no qualms prescribing wholeheartedly to a religion based solely on faith.

Any notion of withholding belief until you have good reason, backed by demonstrable evidence to do so, will be dismissed. They "feel" it to be true, therefore it is true.

And I think it's these same qualities in people that easily have them swayed into believing things like the below.

  • Any significant amount of people believing the earth was flat (you'd be laughed out the room)
  • Extreme climate change denial
  • Antivaxxers even being a thing
  • People being anti-science/pro-religion like that
  • Etc

Nah, they just have a voice and a way to congregate bad voice their stupidity now.

Back in the day it took effort. You had to get mailing list, write a newsletter, spend money on postage etc.

Now you can just turn on a video make a video about flat earth and attract your fellow stupid brethren.

The average person is uninformed. I feel smarter than about 70% of the people I come into contact with and I feel really stupid some days so.......yea. No Dunning-Kruger effect either. Most people would struggle naming more than 10 countries in Africa or the three branches of government and what they did or who the last four chairmen of the federal reserve were or the dates America was founded, the American Revolution, the Civil War, Civil Rights Movement or both World Wars. Not saying you have to know irrelevant arbitrary facts like this but there’s just stuff you should know as a grown adult.
