Also, I think Lupe Fiasco is a very good rapper but I also think he peaked lyrically after he dropped the Cool. Lasers was severely inconsistent and Food and Liquor II was just ok.Even in Enemy of the State and Friend of the People he was basically going back to his Farenheight flow.
AZ only has a so-so mixtape that is a black mark on his resume, but over dudes execution is flawless. The problem is that dude is so technically proficient that it just creates the illusion of not trying, I feel this way about Mos Def, as well. AZ is better lyricist by a considerable margin, dude actually is improving with age.

one line doesnt invalidate hundreds of verses. Problem is, the line is out of context by itself as it's part of a mutliple-bar criticism of pretentious people (which is funny cause some of his own fans and even he himself could be like that lol).
You cant just take one line and judge it with Lupe cause there's so much connectivity with the OTHER lines that shyt wont see that good till you look at the big picture. Call it a generic "defense" of Lupe if you must but truth is that's the rapper that he is. He's not a punchline rapper that you can just take one random line and determine how he is.
and yea AZ will get on his storytelling shyt but most of it involves bytches or street shyt. That's not really stepping out of his comfort zone.
Meanwhile, you look at Lupe's debut, 90% of Food and Liquor is about something different in every song. Much more versatility than AZ tends to show.

It's not just 1 line though, that's my point. He often has pseudo intellectual ineffective or corny bars. That's the issue. And it isn't a case of it going "over my head" or not being intelligent enough to understand it, because I listen to rappers more complex lyrically than Lupe and understand them fully. I think some people aren't intelligent to understand a lot of what Lupe says is bullshyt, or not dope. I give credit where credit is due, dude is a dope lyricist when he's focused. But them crossword puzzle raps or word association raps don't impress me, there is nothing impressive to me about that. Even in context of the verse it's still an awful line, some dudes wanna pick out Nas lines but ignore the multitude of corny/ineffective Lupe lines/verses/songs.
Like, I don't say this without knowledge of Lupe's work, I think I actually have every album and mixtape even. I probably rate F&L2 higher than most people do, even some Lupe fans, and there was certain songs on Lasers even where he brought his shyt across well. But I have to be real about all the work.
Not sure about that either, AZ has done political type joints too.
