The comparison is him vs Lupe. He's not a better writer than Lupe IMO which is why i didnt mention it.

But Lupe, Elzhi, and Black thought are the best 3 rappers in hip hop right now IMO.

but how many times do you actually decipher something that seems complex that Lupe says and come away disappointed vs Elzhi?



and weren't you the first person in this post saying he's got more material than Elzhi? well, I've already established that Elzhi's got a lot more material than y'all give him credit for because maybe you all aren't as familiar with all his stuff.

it seems like the ONLY joint people in here no Elzhi for is the Elmatic joint
yet feel confident and informed enough to make an unbiased opinion

either way Elzhi's bats at at higher percentage and may in the end have just as much material as Lupe


at the end of the day @NoHalfWay I'ma keep it a buck, everytime Lupe has some project come out I peep it and I can acknowledge his ability, but as you say it comes down to personal preference. I like what and how Elzhi does what he does better than Lupe AND Elzhi is the superior rapper.
the same thing working against him in not having that major label support and big time artist cosign has also helped Elzhi and not having to dumb it down and jeopardize his artistic integrity.

That’s what it comes down to.

Elzhi is the poster child for consistency and advanced rapping in its purest form. If there is any true heir apparent to Nas it’s him, but he’s Nas with wittier wordplay.

Lupe is a guy technically advanced as well but can rap in various styles, sound like a completely different artist on one song to the next and still maintain that high level rhyming.

I know this thread is kinda old but I gotta go with Elzhi. It's pretty close, though. El is my favorite rapper from Detroit while Lupe is my favorite rapper from Chicago. I wonder why these two never made a song together. It would be a classic

I'd also like to mention, if I haven't already, that cats are REALLY sleeping on his bars on the stuff he did while he was a member of Slum Village




I don't begrudge anybody for picking Lupe, but I feel like maybe some of the people choosing him(actually I know for a fact) are just going with him because they aren't familiar with Elzhi


that being said, I did my due diligence. got every Lupe album, mixtape, and anything else I could get my hands on(that I didn't already have) and really really listened to them joints

and yeah that nikka nice. I never was disputing that. but at the end of the day to ME he's not as nice as Elzhi


it's just frustrating as a hip hop head to hear cats who only know about Lupe due to the biggest cosign you could ever get in the industry act like he's far and away the best lyricist when the reality is they're comparing Lu to his contemporaries in the mainstream(at the time)

Pharoahe Monch is another emcee who think is just as good if not better than Lupe
