In its first week of release Indicud debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 139,242 copies in the United States.

If that aint selling what is... thats a dope consistent career for a nikka who been out since 09'.

Cudi is a made man at Republic, I know this for fact.

Based on what tho? Sure Cudi sold 139K but his sales fell off a cliff after that. No buzz at all.... what continues to make him a made man at the label?

And this is based on key word called LEVERAGE

Justin Timberlake...Bieber...Jay-z...and Madonna have all engaged in 360 deals....

But the difference is as one industry head shared with me is that these artists have the LEVERAGE where 360 deals actually WORK FOR THEM...

because they are credible global BRANDS that allow the artists to have all thier various ventures and deals consolidated under one umbrella...

with them (the artist) having not only the most equity along with a sizeable advance...but the fact that usually the option of retaining all licenscing , masters and publishing once the deal comes to an end is an option that is usually offered to artists of thier caliber..these are the type of 360 deals that LIVE NATION only offers to a select few!

unfortunatly the ATLANTIC/WARNER 360 deals like the one Lupe is engaged are more exploitive because the artist is not seen as a global revenue phenomenon and also because the artists niche market is not an across the board cross marketing type of demographic....

along with the fact that the company simply lacks the capital to engage in such lucrative ventures and most importantly..

The company (Atlantic/Warner) doesn't have the proper infastructure set up to handle TOURING and MERCHANDISING in a credible marketing manner...

so they basically are just exploiting the artist with no intentions of promoting his or her work to it's fullest potential...
and that's how it's ALWAYS been with any industry

you a top doctor... you can ask for your own office and a bonus and blah blah blah... vs some kid fresh out of med school

if you're coming to the label with 500k independent sales and fresh off a world tour... 5 labels are after you.... you better believe you're gonna get your dikk sucked on that deal...

if you did some radio freestyle and got hot in a 3 state radius when they found you... and nobody else knows you exist... welcome to rape n you records

agree with everything except that it's not rape if it's consensual.

and don't get me wrong. i'm not necessarily "pro-record labels". I know they can be pretty shady in the way they do business at times. what i'm saying is, it's no reason for artists to dissolve themselves out of all responsibility.

a contract he willingly signed knowing the terms before hand and most likely with the counsel of a lawyer?

in that case i'd do my time, fulfill my obligations until i'm free of that contract.
he's not mad about his contract.. Atlantic is

he signed a good deal... so good that when they asked him to renegotiate, he said no fukking way...

then THEY got mad and said ok... we gonna fukk with you now... no release dates unless basically forced... and we ain't helping you do shyt

that's like you signing with a job... you do fukking amazing... and you get rewarded by them saying we need you to take a pay cut

when you say no.. i'm gonna stick with what i signed... they say cool... we'll pay you the same.. but we're taking your office, go work in the hallway, and oh, you clean toilets now..

and on top of that... since you signed.. you CAN'T go get another job.. cause you still under contract

Truth of the matter is, unless you're a superstar artist, you're signing a damn 360.

Everyone knows that Wiz and B.O.B. are in 360's. Lupe came out before and spoke to how they're using songs that he turned down. Without saying too much, I can say that Atlantic has a vault of songs that they hold onto for artists. These are joints they basically make you record and put on your album, because they see them as potential hits. They come with hooks already set, and all you have to do, is lay a few 16's. I don't see how cats can take these pre-filled records and call themselves MC's. And I respect that Lupe has done whatever he's been able to, to fight against that corporate nonsense. They seriously want you to compromise your creative integrity, and a lot of cats will, if they think they'll get paid. Problem is, they won't because those deals are designed to keep them in debt forever. Sad shyt..

Props on the video.

i understand the concept but the analogy doesn't hold cause they can't make him clean toilets if it's not part of the contract. same with the office thing. if the contract doesn't guarantee him a proper workspace then :yeshrug:

whenever signing a contract you should always envision the worst and most hostile situation you could be in with the other party and envision how the contract plays out in that situation. only sign if you're cool with that. that's what contracts are for. heck, it's the same thing with marriage (which is a legal contract as well).

the company doesn't owe you anything. check my sig.

no your contract usually doesn't provide you a list of where your office will be... and i just signed a contract with my company... trust they can move me anywhere they fukking want in this office

yea my job says network analyst... but if tomorrow they said sit here and do all the fukking work (basically making it hard on me) there's no work load portion of my contract

yea it doesn't fit exactly... but the point lupe was saying was, he contract was fukking great... and he just said nah i don't want a 360... and they basically fukk him over every chance they get, for not taking it, on some pure revenge shyt

it's not like he signed something and now he's crying... THEY signed something and now they are crying over how much they didn't get... maybe they should have had their lawyers go over it with them, etc etc

if your company can fukk you over the same way without you being able to get out of the contract to find another job if you,re not happy then

they weren't happy with the contract they offered him, they tried to re-neg. Lupe refused (props to him for that). now they are pissed and making it hard for him but still respecting the contract :manny:. now Lupe is not happy. sounds to me like Lupe is the one who should have signed a better contract.

So what would you suggest Lupe do now?
