Macklemore is just riding the trend of homosexuality becoming socially acceptable and gay people comparing their "plight" to the black Civil Rights movement.

He's not really a good rapper, but he is a reflection of the younger generation that believes hedonistic indulgence is artistic expression and social progression.

He's not the smartest nor most conscientious hip-hop artist, in fact he's not even one of the top ten.
