OK... so now, Aaliyah wasn't a teen singer with teen fans who made youthful music. Yeah man, "Back & Forth" was real mature. :heh:

Come onnnnnn man... this canonization is gettin' strange now. So now, let's renege everything and say not only was Aaliyah unmatched queen of R&B, but she wasn't even classified in the same light as other teenage acts of the time. Come onnnnn man... I'm just sayin'! Are we really gonna throw everybody under the bus like this?

Nicca, did I say ANY of this chit?

You puttin' all kinds of words in my mouth.

What I asked is - didn't Aaliyah come off as more mature than the lot of her teenage counterparts? That's not "throwing anybody under the bus", saying the rest weren't any good, or even that Aaliyah was superior.

A lot of y'all talk about R&B like it's the Rap game...

I'm not sayin' just you, I'm just talking about some of the hilarity in the thread. I think death and nostalgia got folks remembering things differently, that's all.

I don't think she came off more mature than her counterparts- I would say she was more street than Brandy's image was, maybe more hip-hop than Monica was, but that's about it. That's part of why all three of them were as popular as they were- they all had something that set them apart from one another. But I don't think her music was any more or less mature than their stuff was.

yeah, I would agree with that

but I also feel like that era was more mature than this era of R&B music has been (really the last decade)

put it like this, Beyonce is over 30 and is making more or less the same music as those acts were as teens.

You didn't even click play did you :heh:

no, I did. Now listen to her voice, and compare it to Brandy, Monica, or even Beyonce. Those chicks destroy her vocally.

Aaliyah wasnt as weak as Amerie or Alicia Keys, but she isnt dynamic like you are trying your hardest to portray her as.

And my riff isnt even on their voices as much as the music they are making.

So... let's also pretend none of those sales and praise have anything to do with her being deceased.

Not saying ALL OF IT is a result of that, but I'm willing to be that both of her first two albums have sold at least an extra million in the wake of her death.

I don't know how this go-hard discrediting of Monica's stardom happened, but there's a reason 'The Boy Is Mine' was a huge deal. Aside from the song itself, a major part of that song's draw was that it was Brandy and Monica on the same song. Let's not act like Monica was some R&B girl that was only hot on urban radio or some shyt- she had just as many top 10 Hot 100 hits just like Brandy and Aaliyah did... look it up.

I mean, no dis to Aaliyah, seriously. She made great music... but some of y'all in this thread like any young female R&B singer owes her career and had to bow at the feet of the immortal Aaliyah, and I don't recall it being like that at all. She was definitely at the top, but it's not like her existence was stopping everybody else in their tracks.

again more of your short sighted-ness.
plus the cup is only half full bullshyt.

like i said earlier,...
you keep going to bat for monica.
yet monica only got where she got in the wake and timing of the, underage marriage fiasco between aaliyah and r kelly.

brandy was able released after aaliyah's fiasco in back to school fall season.
after aaliyah's marriage fiasco engulfed the spring and summer months.
which catapulted brandy ahead in public perception and pop permeation resulting in sales. as brandy was the sugary anti-thesis to aaliyah in the wake of the underage marriage situation aaliyah/r kelly ahd in the press/law.

as monica was the more grown up but safe alternative to aaliyah.

in the wake of aaliyah's perception publically as a child star was damaged.

from the r kelly marries the underage aaliyah.

right after Groove Theory and right before Skindeep. :heh:

never mind all the christion detail,...
i had to cut this bullshyt and slight to groove theory out as well.

to show and illuatrate more of your faking jax.

consistently, showing you do not know what you are discussing in full.

not to mention your slight of groove theory as well.

as groove theory helped spear head getting rnb with hiphop breaks.
its own draw with less stigma in the culture of hiphop.

to soothe cultral lines from the mca way of thought from mjb.

by way of m's jones and the flopped jeru break for her first single.

as the lines were soothed with the former member of mantronix at the helm, of groove theory.
which your brothers probably did not know about to show you.

also,..you are way off on monica, brandy being anywhere near aaliyah.
as both got to draw because of aaliyah's underage marriage fiasco to r. kelly.

which halted aaliyah's permeation in the pop sense and damaged her child teen sensation draw and perception.
of which, monica and brandy were released to capitalize on the halt of aaliyah's draw.

as monica was the safe edgy content alternative teen coming of age singer to aaliyah.

while brandy was marketed as the anti-thesis sugary alternatce to monica and aaliyah's fiasco.

as both, monica and brandy had their draw.
solely from the draw of aaliyah's marriage fiasco.
halted her permeation and perception as a child star and draw.

on some r kelly is the black modern jerry lee lewis shyt.

which shows more of your lack of detail and bullshyt revision and shortsightedness like fukk'n usual.

i always have to apply the facts to.
as you waywardly and ignorantly talk about topics.
you concretely do not know all the cultural facts, and perception.
nor, the sign of the times to talk about indepthly contentwise.

your use of the big bold button!!
usually, is just a mechanism to highlight a bunch of bold non-factually/culturally supported bullshyt...

What status is Monica though? She's a flop with nothing to brag about. She won no awards, no strong album sales, no magazine covers, lol she didn't even get her own movie. Both Brandy and Aaliyah outsold her. Monica was always dead last in terms of sucess. nikkas need to stop talking reckless without looking up facts lmao

CTHU!! Monica's a flop but damn did we love her. She was our age and made us not even pay attention to Brandy. She was a better singer than Aaliyah, but she should've never taken those hiatuses. It stopped her from being up on top. Brandy always had TV as a backup (or primary depending on where you rank Thea).

I think that's how you have to classify them though. Aaliyah stayed focused on the music, and each time she hit the streets with a great single. Brandy was back and forth with the acting, but same thing. She dropped an album every what...4yrs but you still got the singles for the soundtracks.

Looking back, these women are/were my age, but putting out music that tested their adult counterparts and would be considered timeless. There were none of that bubble gum pop ish, but actual songs that you could feel. Aaliyah was the weakest vocalist of the 3, but that Age ain't Nothing but a Number album....and Brandy could be annoying but she had songs that made you say DAYAMMN!! I think Monica put the most raw emotion into her songs, and that's why the hood sided with her.

Beyonce has none of that. Her lane has always been bubble gum pop-catchy jingle music. She crafted a lane and stuck with it.

Yeah, it got you remembering things differently, as well.

Aaliyah was way more maturer than Brandy and Monica. Are you serious? Aaliyah was singing about sex all through her first and second albums.. Her image was more sexier and aggresive than Brandy and Monica as well.. Monica was singing about NOT giving it up on the first night while Brandy was portrayed as the "goody too shoes".

That;s how it always was. Aaliyah was the "Sexy" one, Brandy was the "Sweetheart", and Monica was always the "hood" one.

Singing about sex doesn't mean her music was "maturer". It made her sound like a 'grown' teenager, and R. Kelly had her singing a jailbait anthem

All three of them sang songs that were a little beyond their years if you really wanna look at the content of the songs. And by that, I don't mean sexual themes, I mean lyrical content-wise, some of those songs could've been sung by artists much older than them. They were "mature" without being "adult".

"Before You Walk Out Of My Life"- wanting to make things right before this love interest walks out of her 14 year old life, now that their long running relationship has deteriorated and changed from what it once was... how many 14 year olds you know been in a relationship that deep, unless she was singin' about a family member?

"Brokenhearted"- a 15 year old girl tryin' to recover from heartbreak, that I'm sure she'll eventually get over at some point in the next 70 years of her life. Not saying you can't be that old and have your heart broken, but that ain't a song that someone twice her age couldn't have also sung.

and then Aaliyah had stuff like "At Your Best", which was an Isleys cover so of course it's beyond her years. And others like "One In A Million", "Heartbroken", "The One I Gave My Heart To", etc.

Singing about sex doesnt make you mature? :snoop:

Aaliyah was 14 singing about fukking older men... and was talking about fukking her boyfriend in "hot like fire", "rock the boat" "more than a woman", and some other album cuts I can't think of atm.

Dont get me wrong, all 3 of them were mature compared to the teen acts of today, but out of those 3, Aaliyah's music was more sexually aggresive and explicit. "At Your Best" alone made several "baby making" soundtrack compilations lol

Even her image was always more sexed up compared to the other 2.

Singin' about sex at a young age does not = maturity. That's like saying every teenager who thinks or talks about sex is mature. Do you believe that? Immature girls fukk older men everyday, B... it's their attempt at thinkin' they're grown-up. So no, that doesn't mean her music was more "mature" than anyone else's.

As far as her music being explicit? You talkin' like she made some Adina Howard type shyt. It wasn't THAT deep bruh. I'm not tryin' to discredit the girl, but these claims of her music being more mature because she made sexual references are laughable at best.

I never said it made her mature, I said it made her more mature compared to the other 2. Aaliyah singing about sex, Monica singing about NOT giving it up, and Brandy was on her bubble gum candy land hop scotch bullsh!t.

Again, I never said Aaliyah's music was explicit or deep overall in the history of music. I said out of THOSE 3, Aaliyah's music was the most explicit, which is true.

WHy did you think Aaliyah got so much flack for her first album and she wouldn't tell her age? I remember back in the day in an interview Brandy AND Brandy's mother commented on how Aaliyah's clothing and music was inapropriate.

did you get brandy's mom's quote from the same book of :duck: that you got the story about monica & brandy having real life beef? CUT THE CHIT.

so having the most explicit music makes you the most mature now? i guess everybody that rocked a bandana was gangsta too right? at the end of the day, r.kelly was the one behind the image & content(which wasnt as explicit as you people make it seem). then you watch her interviews and youre looking at a whole different person. its called a packaged artist. if you were actually around during that time, you would know this and wouldnt be carrying on these silly arguments.

and youre in here mentioning songs like "rock the boat" & "more than a woman" which came out when she was like 22 and they were all out of the teen lane and not even comparable to each other anymore.

What difference does it make if it was Cassie and Rihanna? We are talking about influencing artists. (Which you havent posted of Monica). Aaliyah still influenced a caliber of artists, Beyonce, Jojo, And Tiffany Evans are great singers and they admit to being influenced by Aaliyah. She even influenced rappers such as Drake and Jcole. You can make excuses all you want, but the proof is in the videos. I'm still waiting for proof that Monica is "more influential and made a bigger impact than Aaliyah". Monica was just a regular singer. You can find any girl at your local church choir that sounds just like her. Yeah she can sing, but that's all you can say about Monica.

are you really this simple? the point is that you responded to my post by droppin links that did nothing but further my point & strengthen my argument.

and i didnt post links simply because i dont need to. for one, youre already helping my prove my points anyway. and its already no secret that monica influenced alot of people. we've even seen singers give her props on national tv. not just young singers, but older singers have gone out of their way to give her props as well(cant say that about aalyiah). and searching for a bunch of obscure links is not my thing. thats kid chit.

the rest of your argument is

Did y'all really classify Aaliyah with them other young'uns, though?

Aaliyah came out like a grown-ass woman, she was coming for the same demo as TLC, SWV and them broads. When "Back & Forth" came out, we had no idea she was 14. She wouldn't have been on a cut like "The Boy Is Mine", because she came off like the kind of broad that wouldn't fight wit' a bytch over a dude. Listen to "If Your Girl Only Knew", for example.

no she wasnt. we knew from the start that aalyiah was like 15.

she wasnt on "the boy is mine" because she wasnt in the top 2. there would be no significance in having aalyiah on that record whatsoever.

yall going all out with the revisionisms in here. lol.

Wanna Be Down was about as huge as Back & Forth. They dropped the same year breh and they were 5 & 6 on the top 100 charts. Baby was #4. At your best was 6. You can't make the argument that Brandy's were smashes and Aaliyah's weren't.

You could make the argument for Sitting Up In My Room sure. It really depends on what you use to determine a smash hit. But no way you can call Wanna Be Down a smash hit and in the same breath downplay Aaliyah's singles.

And I remember hearing Monica's tracks but none of'em really stood out back then. I don't remember people being :ohlawd: about the songs themselves. They were like that about her singing but I don't think people were really pining for Monica like that...and it showed in her sales clearly. She couldn't even bank off of The Boy Is Mine even though that's what she named her album. She should've eaten much better off of that single.

Anyway, I'm not making the argument that they weren't on Aaliyah's level so this is moot for me. I'm just saying that they were all on a comparable level and had their own lanes.

And I never said that Beyonce made songs for teenagers. I said most of her songs are fluff that don't last at all. Or in other words, her works are for the most part dated...whereas tracks like One In A Million stand the test of time.

:stopitslime:

while youre number-crunching, youre neglecting to take into consideration, bigger things such as impact.

but im noticing that youre avoiding that because youre not qualified to speak on it, hence the "i didnt know people liked monica like that" quote of yours.

and who could forget the classic "4-page letter is one of the most remembered songs of the '90s" quote you dropped yesterday. keep em comin.

yet monica only got where she got in the wake and timing of the, underage marriage fiasco between aaliyah and r kelly.

man, do you seriously think that these chicks stopped listening to aalyiah because of the scandal?:what:

all the girls listened to all 3 of these singers as well as a host of others in their lane. its just that they liked some more than others. simple as that. monica & brandy were just a step above aalyiah. deal with it. lol.

What does her image and style being packaged by someone else have to do with the fact that it was STILL too mature a 14 year old? She was 15 singing about banging nikkas. Thats NOT apropriate or even okay to do... She was singing what older people were singing about while Brandy and Monica were singing more teen/kid friendly music. I dont see how this point is so complicated to process in y'all brains. Even her IMAGE was more adult compared to other 2. Aaliyah was always wearing tight bras/naval showing shirts while Brandy and Monica were mostly fully clothed. Come on now.

And you didn't post links because you KNOW Monica isn't more influential or made a bigger impact than Aaliyah. Because if she did, you would post something to support your argument and prove me wrong. But you haven't post proof to support ANYTHING you claimed. :usure:

Brandy was above Aaliyah, but Aaliyah and Monica were on the same level, and you don't have ANY facts to prove otherwise. How Monica was on another level with lower album sales? No awards? No Movie career? No Modeling career? No impact or influence? Lol. She lost.

she wasnt on "the boy is mine" because she wasnt in the top 2. there would be no significance in having aalyiah on that record whatsoever.

yall going all out with the revisionisms in here. lol.

Really, nicca? When her FIRST SINGLE dropped, you just automatically knew how old she was? Is that what you're saying? Her jump off single was more of an adult comtemporary R&B cut than a teeenybop song. The only reason we considered otherwise was because "Age Ain't Nothin' But A Number" came out not long after that.

Nobody would believe Aaliyah on a track gettin' at Brandy over a dude because we all knew Aaliyah could take Brandy's man. LOL

So sit down and stop actlin' like you got the gottdamn "R&B Power Rankings Almanac" from 1998.
