This thread was supposed to be about Aaliyah vs Beyonce and she's barely mentioned. It turned into an Aaliyah vs Monica vs Brandy discussion amongst hip-hop heads. They are all relatively the same age, even tho Beyonce debuted a little later than the other 3, still she's not being discussed.

THAT'S the difference between the two. We are talking about quality music, and while none of them were on the same levels of popularity as Beyonce (or even in the same stratosphere) their music is/was better for a bunch of hip-hop heads.

I think this is a good place to close it...

imo you can't really compare Beyonce and Aaliyah. Their music has always given me two different vibes. Beyonce makes pop anthems and she's probably the best at doing it. Aaliyah's music is a lot more soulful. Her voice in general is just a lot more soft and chilled out. What you prefer is based on personal choice. What does surprise me about this thread is how there are so many dudes here sticking up for B. Y'all are really out here bumping her shyt like that?

I think that the reasons why people would say Aaliyah was bigger than Brandy and Monica is because of the impact. Aaliyah's songs and albums had more impact than Brandy's and Monica's even though they were selling more and charting higher. Take "Are You That Somebody" for example, it didn't chart higher than Monica's "First Night", or Brandy/Monica's "The Boy Is Mine", but the impact that it had was bigger. In '98, Brandy and Monica ruled R&B, but it's like their singles and albums from that year are hardly talked about or discussed. At least not in the manner that "Are You That Somebody" is in terms of how that song impacted the genre. Aaliyah wasn't bigger than Brandy or Monica, she just stood out more because of the sound and she was more low key.

meh, those brandy & monica catalogs are still discussed.

aalyiah had more impact with the hip-hop crowd - moreso thanks to r.kelly, timbo & missy. and i understand that this is a hip-hop board so naturally most people on here arent trying to hear me.

again, monica and brandy,..got to draw because of aaliyah.plus their labels taking advantage of aaliyah's underage ststutory rape marriage to r.kelly.* which created damaging stigma, pr and perception towards aaliyah's kd sexy draw with mr twelve play.i wish the oerson who even mentioned brandy and monica would die.as it is completely obvious that poster.did not and still doee not have a grasp of what actuallytooknplace in that time.as no one who was around and knows the full history would even mention brandy and monica.if they knew the full history of how brandy and monica's draw and permeation came about.* which was distinctly from splitting and making the draw from* aaliyah into pg safe content.* which is how monica and brandy even had impact in the market place.art barr

:childplease:

AGAIN, aaliyah didnt lose any fans from that scandal so stop trying to use that as a crutch.

also, monica & brandy were going to drop albums when they did, regardless of whether or not aaliyah even existed.

did their p.r. people spin aalyiah's bad p.r. in their favor? i wouldnt be surprised but its not as much of a factor as youre trying to make it seem.

Nicca..."Back & Forth" is the same kinda song as "Hey Mr. DJ", and that wasn't marketed as "teenage R&B". It was something you could hear at the club or the house party, it's just that teens were bumping it too.I find it funny that you went the gay angle wit' it...If you had two girls on your line, and one was looking like Brandy and the other looked like Aaliyah, which one would you press? Ain't nothin' gay about that...unless you on something I ain't on...

"hey mr DJ" had a much broader reach & was more mature. its a song that ACTUALLY DID get play on adult urban radio. its nothing for me to hear it getting played during the michael baisden or tom joyner show. you'll rarely hear an aalyiah joint getting played on those shows/stations. you do the math.

i never said who i would smash first. i was pointing out how girly your argument was. but since you want to take it there, yes, i'd smash '90s brandy over aalyiah. sorry but aaliyah aint even really have no body, and she wasnt all that pretty either. she had her moments but i was never really attracted to her. she got away with being a redbone with good hair.

but whats startling is that youre trying to insinuate that im gay because im not hype over a chick that had a body comparable to that of a 12 year old boy.

man, where yall be getting this "more soulful" stuff from?

aint nothing soulful about aalyiah. beyonce got more soul than her and thats not saying much.

its not even about riding for beyonce. i could care less about the jawn. its moreso about how ridiculous this thread is.

Because of Rkely, Tim, and Missy? It was because of AALIYAH. Her singing style, her swag, her look. Yes, Those 3 people helped her behind the scenes, but what artist DOESN'T have a team to rely on? Brandy had Darkchild, Monica had Jermaine Dupri, MJ had QUincy Jones, Beyonce has sean garret and the dream, and the list goes on. I don't know why y'all try to use that "missy/tim" shyt against Aaliyah. EVERY artist relies on some producer.

Huh? Aaliyah's first album sales were declining when that whole scandal was going on. She was even booed at the soul train awards in 1995 and got snubbed for ALL of her awards that year. All of her singles from that album flopped AFTER the scandal. Aaliyah had to totally win her fans over again with "One in A Million"

And you would smash Brandy's bug eyed, et lookin ass over this?

:mjpls::mjpls:

Beyonce has more soul? In what way? None of her songs are "soulful" It's just generic radio slop.... That's why people always critisize Beyonce for not having 'classics"

youre playing dumb & talking in circles. a sign of defeat.

yes, everybody has a team. mad people in here have already broken down the reason why aaliyah catches flack for that and the others dont. and theyve broken this down multiple times already. the same thing with this soul chit youre talking as if aaliyah was so soulful. knock it off.

what singles flopped from that 1st album? the 4th single? most 4th singles dont do all that great. i dont even remember it.

yes, i would give it to aalyiah softbody in that pic, but you posting one of her better pics dont mean nothing. all her pics are either hit or miss. besides, im into face, titties & butt. brandy supplied the goods better than aalyiah. aalyiah had a better face but she wasnt all that pretty either half the time. theyre in the same ballpark. if you think otherwise, youre more than likely programmed to run with your thoughts.

What I meant by discussed is magazines discussing those albums is in terms of acclaim. Nothing from Monica or Brandy's catalog is credited with changing or shifting the direction of music. In that regard, their catalogs are somewhat underrated in comparison to Aaliayah's. Even before Aaliyah died, she received more credit than both in that regard. There's Rock/Pop groups that credit "Are You That Somebody" with inspiring them to make ground breaking music.

Talking in circles? I provide PROOF to everything I state, You know that by now, check the previous pages. You however, just babble on on sh!t you dont even remember. :deadrose:

"J: How did you feel when you were booed at the Soul Train Awards last year?

A: Well, I wasn't there, but I heard about it. That's why I feel it's important to come out and say what happened because I feel that the fans need to know. That's a reason why, because they don't know what really happened. That's why I feel its cool to talk to you, so that you can let them know that I have no connection with that anymore. That was a negative, but that's over with now and I'm moving on with my life. It did surprise me, but I understand why.

J: It's good that you understood.

AD: But then too, what is not really being looked at is the manipulation. And I think that Aaliyah needs to address that to young people coming into this business. Manipulation is a very key word in this business. I'm a grown man and I've learned about it , so I'm not coming like I'm all seeing and knowing. But you can see that you can be [manipulated] and they try to manipulate the press. The press could've gotten mad at Aaliyah. It was my decision to keep my daughter quiet, and you can quote that. Aaliyah is coming out now because we feel it's the best time and she's coming out to a credible person like yourself. So she's here talking to Jamie Brown about what the real deal is. The real deal is that there was manipulation going on. The fact that mattered was that it was stated on the American Music Awards. "

What body does Brandy have? I dont see n!ggas talking about her body like they do beyonce, jlo, or kim kardashian. Lol @ you acting like she has a body like Kim K or Beyonce. Foh!

Aaliyah was always noted for her looks, which is why she made countless "sexy" lists and lists for her beauty, Brandy hardly makes them because shes ugly (at least to me). Brandy even said that she feels uncomfortable trying to look sexy.

And you said Aaliyah was a hit or miss? Um, what normal human being DOESN'T have good or bad days? Beyonce is fine as fvck, But I can dig up more than 20 pics of her looking like a sea monster. it doesn't take away how she looks on her best day. The fact is, Aaliyah on a good day>> Brandy on a good day.

meh, i feel u but i dont deal with magazines and most of that phoney chit.

and im talking r&b here. monica wasnt geared towards the pop crowd AT ALL aside from a few songs here n there. and those rock groups were more than likely influenced by the beats. thats all neither here nor there.

im keeping it r&b. all that other talk is extra-curricular in regards to the task at hand.

:what: man yousa simple @$$.

i said that youre talking in circles because YOURE TALKING IN CIRCLES. rehashing the same ole "points" that have already been shot down and not just by me. and i dont even think youre posting some of that chit with a str8 face.

and you can have your google game on swole all you want but most of your links arent amounting to chit. youre just posting links just to post em, thinking thats gonna get you somewhere. thats how simple you are. the only links you posted that proved any points you made were the ones where brandy & her moms thru shots at aalyiah. and i gave you props for that, even tho at the end of the day, they really werent worth a dam to the overall point either.

i wasnt arguing about the soul train awards, nor do i give a f*ck. yet, you posted a bunch of chit concerning it for absolutely no reason and i dont know why. i didnt even read the chit. i clicked on the link just for the jermaine dupri part that you were bragging about and hes not proving your point at all. hes just riding for the chick that put extra scratch in his pocket. all you really did was prove my point, being that one of the reasons why she was a step behind monica & brandy is because she was seen as a packaged studio artist, hence "they thought she was only good because of r.kelly". nobody ever said that chit about monica & brandy. so thanks again for proving my point.

and like i said, jd was just riding for her. she didnt prove that she wasnt living off of her producers & writers at all. she jumped from r.kelly to timbaland & missy. i forgot that jd did work on that album too. thanks again buddy. i dont even have to argue. youre doing all the work for me by sabotaging yourself. wit ya simple @$$.

didnt know "at your best" charted so low. the impact was still there for it. she lost money NATURALLY but didnt lose any real ground. and i already know about the soul train awards chit and dont care. a number of bigger stars got booed there. so what? youre in here arguing with youreself. wit ya simple @$$.

brandy was thick in the '90s. and im not even saying she was all that hot. im just saying i'd knock her down before aaliyah. why you think i even give a dam about some dagone lists are beyond me. im a grown @$$ black man. i pipe what i like. of course a culturally-bias white people list is gonna pump up a petite, light-skinned, non-threatening looking celebrity chick as one of the faces of black beauty. of coure theyre going to do that. is that your argument? are you this f*ckin simple? look man, like what you like. but depending on lists and bullchit like that to figure out who you want to dig out first is some closet homo chit.

and why are you so worried about where i lay my d*ck? chit has nothing to do with nothing in this thread. and if i saw a chick looking like brandy or aalyiah walk past me, i prolly wouldnt even holla unless i had time to pass. also, i liked aaliyah's music more than brandy so i dont even know why we're in here arguing off-topic chit between the two. i was more into the idea of getting in the pants of monica, 702 & mya as far as that lane is concerned.
