This is a popular lake in Oregon called Lake Shasta. This is much different than what would be considered a "beach". When people go here they say they're going "to the lake" not "to the beach".

You're absolutely right, that's kind of the point I'm making. If you're not from that area your not just going to automatically think they have massive bodies of water with beaches. Dude tried to exaggerate it into some "the school system failed you" rhetoric. If you're not from that area this is not common knowledge.The issue is that you're comparing a small local lake to Lake Michigan.
Most people not from the area don't realize how big it is. It's the same size as West Virginia.
And yes there are a few dozen beaches in Chicago.
