It's been under the radar in Western media but Lebanon is in the middle of a MASSIVE economic crisis right now. Like, there ain't even bread in the stores and regular middle-class people have no food level crisis. If this fukks them up even worse, there will be actual starvation.

Yup. The value of their currency dropped to a third of what it was previously last time I checked. Foreign investors been running for the doors for months now and their central banks can’t maintain the fixed rate/peg anymore.

I don't know a lot, I only found out myself a month or two ago and just because my wife has a good friend who lives there.

The mainstream narrative is that the government has had massive, massive problems with corruption. They had massive problems in the banking system and the country's basic infrastructure, but nothing was getting fixed because they were all primarily concerned with just siphoning shyt out for themselves. So back in October last year the government basically ran out of foreign currency and defaulted on its debts. That made it that much more difficult for them to do international trade, plus inflation started hitting as their currency lost value. Then COVID hit them, they went on lockdown, people got laid off, so their currency was losing value AND people didn't have money either. And imports were fukked. So they just started running out of shyt and most people had no way to get any more shyt.

Like I said, that's the superficial level. At a deeper level I'm sure there could be other shyt I'm not informed on. The religious tensions are probably involved (it's a pretty split Sunni/Shia/Christian country and everyone's always out for their own), the regional tensions are probably involved, but I don't know enough to really speak on it.

If that's all true then the port of Beirut being destroyed on top of that is even worse.
They were probably counting on that port to bring the economy back once covid was gone.
They been using that port since before jesus
France and Switzerland both rely heavilyon that port, it represents so much business

Now Israel has been targetting that port saying it's been used to bring weapons to terrorists.

The fact that 50 fukking tonnes of ammonium nitrate were stored on some :ld: is just perfectly Arab :smh:

this goes high up and given that the people are already fed up with the corruption and outright incompetence of politicians there will really cause some major upheaval.

For fukks sake Saudi Arabia literally kidnapped Saad Hariri (Whose father was assassinated in a bomb attack in the 2000s) and he was missing for weeks!!! A fukking head of state gone and unaccounted for :dahell: all under US supervision and condoned with not a peep made.

then you got Hezbollah which is always the so called spokespersons for poor Shia Lebanese in west Beirut. Always aligned with Syria.

then you got the Lebanese christians.

not to mention the huge Palestinian refugee population Who have been there for 40+ years.

this cannot be broken down simply its a Geopolitical mess and that country stays getting pulled every which direction.

mind you ever day Lebanese people just wanna work, have their businesses flourish and have fun.
