Matthew Shipp ranted that 7 Piano Sketches is “complete and utter crap

” and “does not even deserve the attention of a critique it is so dreadful

” Here’s what he wrote:

"So a friend called me up and mentioned that #Andre3000 has a piano album out, I was like what??? I checked it out on #youtube, my impression of it. I think it is complete and utter crap

Is he some type of f*cking ass*ole? Is he a complete and utter dilletante? I could go into detail about why each cut is stillborn, but why bother, it does not even deserve the attention of a critique it is so dreadful

The guy is not a pianist, that is the beginning and the end of it. What an ugly piano sound , lets not even talk about telling a story with harmony. Sounds like he listens to a bunch of music gets a couple of gestures in his head, sits down in a stream of consciousness, and gets at some gesture for a few bars of something that he has not internalized and barely knows on the most superficial level, and then he loses the thread. Of course there is zero composition going on in the improvisations, no language to speak of just a few cliches in his head that he can’t actually play the cliche but he hits and tries at it until he peters out quickly. Wow

He is so horrible at playing harmony

So many horn players that piano is not their instrument play so much better

This sounds to me like pure fraud

What a lack of respect for the discipline by someone who in my opinion is a complete ass*ole for doing this

It is depressing that this garbage will get any attention because he has a name and fame. There is nothing refreshing about the naivety of it. It is just downright dreadful and awful. True f*cking crap insipidly wretched nothing

I agree to a level. Andre is not a good musician and is now hopping around different instruments despite not being able to play any of them well. What is being termed improvisation is him learning on the job and just like with the flutes he can't play the actual shyt. Or replay it. The flute album I was willing to see as just expression and he got help from musicians to flesh it out and tour it. But he was the worst part of that tour. he stank on stage. Now he's badly playing the piano as well? That's kind of too much.

He kind of is. Now I've been clasically trained on the piano myself so I am familiar with the instrument. 3 Stacks album is terrible. He is literally just mashing keys and playing random azz chords.

It's like Lil Wayne's Rockstar era when he was playing the guitar and pissing off real guitarist.

3stacks literally recorded this on his iphone and is selling it for 8 bucks. He's 3 stacks so of course it's going to draw more attention than it deserves. He should play the instrument better. II do think it's a slight to pianist and flutest who have actually dedicated time and precision to their craft. They won't get invited to a Jazz Festival like 3 Stacks.

At the end of the day, it's his music performed to a level satisfactory to himself. He chose to share it with the world and the word can listen if they chose

I heard the first couple tracks and wasn't blown away but it wasn't offensively bad to me

Like, "Oh, this is cool" and moved on

Dude ain't harming anybody with this album. And with all the shyt going on in the music industry, his piano skills ain't hurting nobody either way
