Albums Max B - Public Domain 7 : The First Purge (Discussion Thread)

I mean, I went through the project, it was good, but I ain’t find myself replaying it much. I’m crankin my Detroit shyt, that new Larry June track, this was cool for the sake of even seeing a project from a free Max B. But again, if I’m honest, he’s got a good amount of rust to knock off.

Plus some of the beats weren’t wavy fr. They just sounded expensive. And this new flow is definitely a wait and see thing cuz while I get the vision it still doesn’t sound that great. Like someone else said it’s some rough draft shyt, but a rough draft shouldn’t be a part of the Public Domain series. PD6 is arguably the GOAT mixtape period so only thing that should’ve followed it up was some Members of Byrdgang level transcendent heat.

I'm on Pink Cookies which sounded a bit more like Max old vocal style,

Finish your breakfast sounded like the engineer tried to create too much separation between the vocal layers, whereas that classic Max sound has them all kinda stacked centrally for that muffled Max vocal.

I know this some engineer talk but I know someone gets me lol, hoping the rest is more Pink Cookies style.

I've been listening to the whole tape since it came out and been avoiding the intro lol. Hated it. im going to give it some spins today.

After giving this some time to marinate I think this was a decent "welcome back" tape for Max. He's clearly rusty so Im looking at this like an appetizer.

One of the strong points for Max as an artist is his flow. He can catch a pocket on a beat and just blackout. I think thats missing here because he's experimenting with new flows & melodies. Dame is all over here, but where the fukk is Young Los? I think bro retired.

Its driving me crazy because he just dropped joints from jail where he's flowing like classic max. We didnt get that here so that was the only disappointing piece to me.

This is honestly what upset me this most to be honest. I get the early 90s concept he was going for with this tape but it just ain't hit for me.
