Watching how people view Hammer now is fascinating.

He LITERALLY got clowned for his brand of rap by everyone... when the reality is, he was more of a real gangsta than the dudes criticizing him (like Ice Cube).

People wasn't clowning him for not being a gangster, and he wasn't one anyway.

Dude went broke paying literally hundreds of people in his entourage. A few of them were willing to crash out, that's it.

People clowned him because he literally became a whore to cross over, in an era where hip-hop was fighting for mainstream acceptance. As is, not some dance/rap/pop hybrid.

EDIT:

Also he dissed RUN DMC for no reason.

Never thought about him once. More space for the pioneers and greats:manny:

Agreed.

He never comes to mind when I think of Hip Hop history, except as an example of how wack shyt can become very popular.

Now. He is absolutely an expert at performance, choreography, marketing, and just about everything to do with pop music. Except skills on the mic. I can't take away from his work ethic and tenacity. I respect the man overall.

If he would have popped up during one of the tributes, I prolly woulda been grinning and checking for his dance moves.

We didn't get on Hammer until the Chicken commercial

That was when he became damn near indefensible but people initially had an issue with him because he dissed RUN DMC.

An article from 1991:

He gave people several reasons to not like him. Some people (not you, or anyone in this thread that I've seen) act like he was successful and that alone was the reason.

I misread your post and thought you meant he got clowned for his brand of rap when he was actually a gangster.

NEVER knew he dissed Run DMC. :ohhh:

But still I agree with him. Everyone from the East hated him, so don't try to be friends now.
