After a drawn-out federal case, Mendeecees Harris was sentenced in Rochester to 97 months in prison. The music producer, 36, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in April, according to
Democrat & Chronicle.
Last April, Harris
took a deal and pled guilty to felony drug trafficking and conspiracy,
admitting that he, his brother and another man ferried large amounts of cocaine and heroin to upstate New York.
Despite the deal, Harris still faced up to 40 years in prison and a $5 million fine. On June 30, his brother
Tyrus was sentenced to five years in prison for his “minor” involvement in a drug trafficking network that transported
$2.5 million dollars in drugs between 2005 and 2012 from New York City to the Rochester region.
But prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office recommended that Harris’ sentence be downgraded, so that he serves between 108 months and 121 months in the Big House. The feds wrote that Harris deserved a break because he admitted his role in the major drug ring and cooperated with authorities on the terms of his plea deal.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office also requested that Harris forfeit his earnings from the hit reality show – nearly $171,000 – as well as pay an additional $100 fine when he’s sentenced Oct. 2.
“Upon the ground that the defendant has assisted authorities in the investigation or prosecution of the defendant’s own misconduct by timely notifying authorities of the defendant’s intention to enter a plea of guilty, thereby permitting the government to avoid preparing for trial and permitting the government and the court to allocate their resources efficiently,
the government hereby moves the court to apply the additional one level downward adjustment for acceptance of responsibility…” Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Sherman wrote to the court Sept. 11.
The sentence was the lowest possible term under a plea agreement that included a maximum sentence of just over 10 years. Harris' attorney, Donald Thompson, says the judge recognized the work Harris has been doing since his arrest to deter young people from drug trafficking.
At his federal court sentencing Tuesday,
Mendeecees Harris also agreed to forfeit the $171,000 he's made from the television show, along with a 2011 Audi R8 sports car worth $111,000.
In December 2013 U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr. sentenced a third member of the conspiracy Ronald Walker to 10 years in prison.
Walker was ordered to forfeit assets totaling $2.5 million to the United States, which represented the amount of proceeds from the drug trafficking conspiracy.
A news release from the United State’s Attorney’s office reports that between 2005 and August 2012, Walker was part of the conspiracy to distribute cocaine and heroin between New York City and Rochester.
Walker arranged for the distribution of cocaine and heroin while he was in New York City through others to individuals who were transferring the drugs to Rochester and distributing them. Walker pleaded guilty in August to trafficking cocaine and heroin.
In addition, Walker laundered drug proceeds by placing at least
$911,000 in cash in safe deposit boxes opened by other people to conceal the proceeds.
Authorities seized the cash in August 2012, as well as approximately $615,000 in cash from two residences connected to the defendant.
Walker agreed to forfeit all of that cash, as well as a 2012 Range Rover, some jewelry and two properties located in Corona, New York, and Union City, Georgia.
