I mean Funk Flex is the premier show, so there's no reason for him to play underground. :manny:
The other timeslots and shows OTOH should be playing local and underground hip hop that has a buzz or that's really good.

Conway was coming off his debut Shady album, he did have freestyles on Flex before but that won't always help.

There's a huge generational gap in NY and a big part of it is NY radio didn't do it's job of keeping the classics and the legends in rotation as years went by. Outside of Biggie and Jay Z they aren't consistently playing NY legends as much as they should. There are grown adults who grew up in NY their whole life who probably can't name a song from dudes like Meth & Red or their peers(Wu Tang for example is barely played) and it's the fault of dudes like Ebro and Funk Flex

My Pops Forever RIP
They had Summer Jam already

:wtf:
shocked me too. I re-evaluated where I stood in life and then it hit me

1. I don't listen to Hot 97 anymore, not even by accident. Either I plug in my iPod with 13000 songs and press shuffle or I play a podcast. If I'm ridin with family and they have the radio on, it's always some Spanish shyt.
2. I wasn't even thinking about when it was coming or who was on it. Didn't even care for the ads.
3. This ain't for me anymore.

The Hip Hop 50 Concert at Yankee Stadium was right up my alley. This is just a reflection that I'm disconnected mostly from what they think is in.

Summer jam up until about 5-6 years ago had their crowd

A bunch of flabby nikkas matching head to toe

But as of late hot 97 try to get too young with the lineup..but it’s never the poppin young artists..it’s people who are like d-list artists in New York , with 1 regional hit…so I have no idea who the crowds are

Because rolling loud audience ain’t going to summer jam

But meth and red audiences aren’t going either

It’s just a bunch of people in attendance for no reason and no common ground

They really should just end it altogether..and sometime in the future bring it back randomly and make it “the return of summer jam “ type shyt with more relevant artists at that time

It's not Funk Flex's fault, but you're right about everything else. Flex has always tried to keep real hip-hop in the mix. He's brought all types of rappers to his Freestyle show which has helped careers. There was a brief period some years ago he even started a YouTube DJ mix show under Hot 97 where he would bring on pioneering DJs to do sets.

Hip-Hop radio in NYC doesn't have subgenres. In California, I believe they have a few stations that focus on or partly cater to older rap.

I assume NorCal stations play local rap heavily. New York has gone through so many scenes, subgenres and potential superstars since the 2000s but the mainstream never saw it because the radio never platformed them much or at all.

For a 30th...that overall line up was cheeks.

The only good ones were literally the old school artists
If this was the 30th year, they should’ve did it big and had 2 stages: one for the older/legacy acts that held down Summerjam in its heyday, and another with all the recent/relevant acts
