Michael Wilbon: Black Folks and analytics don't mix

Are you Black? do you "like analytics?"

  • I am Black, African American, etc

  • I am not Black

  • I like & understand analytics

  • I don't have a use for analytics at all

  • I don't understand and don't want to understand analytics

  • I like or use analytics in moderation

  • Analytics is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • The Eye test is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • a mix of analytics and eye test is the best way to determin how good or bad someone or team is

Nah, I don't fukk with them analytics. In my opinion it's just some shyt to keep those who weren't good enough to actually play the game involved in the game. Also, it's starting to be a way to keep blacks OUT of coaching and head office jobs IMO.

No, there isn't some grand agenda in knowing more data. You're at a disadvantage if you don't have working knowledge of stuff like this. If it wasn't useful, it wouldn't be used. If anything, it's a good way for minorities, whether they played the game or not, to get in the door. It's phasing out a lot of heads who don't wanna move with the times

I'm sayin'.

In my opinion, stats don't mean shyt in basketball or football because the sample size is always too small. 16 games ain't shyt. 82 games ain't shyt. Playing 45-48 minutes per game ain't shyt.

And there's not that many variables/factors in these sports to make any of these ratios worthwhile.

But if it's not a big enough sample size for analytics, how is it a big enough sample size for the eye test?

The eye test is subject to all kind of bias, errors, etc.

It's this kind of arrogant bytchmade attitude that a lot of geeks who live/die by analytics have that turns people off. I don't think that anyone hates analytics. People hate feminine attitudes like yours when it comes to analytics. Here we have a story that includes NBA players themselves explaining why they don't live/die by analytics and why that can be problematic, yet that doesn't stop you from running in here being all bytchmade and dismissive.
What's with the constant strawmanning by the analytics detractors? I don't know anyone who lives or dies by analytics or who promotes looking at PERs instead of watching games.

Analytics doesnt have to include advanced stats and it doesn't have to revolve around efficiency. If you wanted a guy that could go one on one and score when contested, you could use analytics to identify those guys.

If you're on a team and you need an end of game play and there was a sheet that showed your bread and butter plays and how often each was effective, why wouldn't anyone want to use that?

I remember Michael Jordan said he would make LeBron go left if he defended him despite analytics saying LeBron is dominant on the left side of the floor and the fact that LeBron is actually a natural lefty who shoots right handed...

I don't get to deep into it like Cacs do to supports most of their arguments in online sports forums, but I generally do look at stats to get a clear picture of how a game or players performance turned out. Take GSW vs OKC last game, there was a 20 point disparity in free throws by half time of that game, which which supported my emotional argument while watching , that OKC were the more aggressive team and getting to the line. If you've watch games or played long enough, your eyes usually don't lie, and sometime anyalitics can't account for unusual circumstances, or a persons psychological makeup that can effect performance.

Im a huge geek and i hate analytics

Why? Because analytics are nothing but statistics, which, if you know anything about statistics, you know they can be manipulated to say ANYtHINg.

Its basically just a sports media agenda to keep people watching and to fill the 24 hr news cycle imo. Great ENTERTAINMENT, not much value

I remember some guy made a statement similar as to why black people aren't cut to be quarterbacks based off our inability to strategize.
