Michael Wilbon: Black Folks and analytics don't mix

Are you Black? do you "like analytics?"

  • I am Black, African American, etc

  • I am not Black

  • I like & understand analytics

  • I don't have a use for analytics at all

  • I don't understand and don't want to understand analytics

  • I like or use analytics in moderation

  • Analytics is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • The Eye test is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • a mix of analytics and eye test is the best way to determin how good or bad someone or team is

The only sport I use it heavy in is baseball because baseball is almost all statistics based and it fits because it's a team sport but played individually. You are what your numbers say you are

In the other sports especially football they'res too many variables

In basketball you can use your eyes to know that Lebron is the best player in the league and without having an all time great on your team your chances of winning a title is close to zero. You can analytics your way to a title in basketball. The only way to win is pretty simple: get lucky and find the best 2 or 3 players in the league
The Eye Test and being lucky is what can get you a LeBron. Analytics are what can help you keep him, even to a point where you're not needing to break the bank to do so.

Analytics should be used at your white collar job(or blue collar if you're dealing with production efficiency).

Not for the athletes who play the shyt.

I was playin 2k last night. 9 minute quarter in the finals. I win game 1. I exit and go back to the playoff menu and them muthafukkaz analytically displayed what the score woulda been had i played 12 minute quarters:dwillhuh:

And my response would be Leonard is your best player so give him the fukking ball
And that response is very common. The people who employ that "get your best player the ball and get out of his way" gameplan don't like to analyze the results so they'll never know or care how ineffective it is compared to other strategies. Ignorance is bliss.

I think some people who weren't around for those eras may rely more on stats but the knowledgeable people that I know use a combination of numbers and the eye test, which to me is the best way to do it.

Advanced stats are fine as long as they're used within the right context
fair, but I've also seen "smart" people like Tom Haberstroh tweet out stats about how Steph Curry had made more 3s in x amount games than Larry Bird did his entire career without providing any type of context.

This article got me feeling some kind of way.

Most sports fans that I personally know aren't having deep ass analytics based conversations by the water cooler...black, white, Asian, whatever.

Not really feeling the focus on blacks...and the anti-intellectualism that can be inferred from this piece.

But perhaps I'm looking too deep.

Maybe. Analytics also told Pop to keep the greatest defensive player of his generation on the bench in the last 30 seconds of game 6 against the Heat:dead:

I don't like the race baiting with the article but it's interesting nonetheless..

But Michael Wilbon gets on my nerves and he's a fakkit to boot.

I don't expect draymond green to be pouring over kenpom esque reports during pregame prep. What I do expect is the film dept/scouts/coaches etc prepare him videos he uses and help with the other teams tendencies and weaknesses and strengths of guys he will matchup with, and how he can best try and exploit or stay away from them. Green is using analytics. He's just seeing it in a different form

He just won a ship in 2010... so the game has passed him by in 6 years? :deadrose:
Life comes at you fast.

He can coach a team, but when it comes to being able to shop for the ingredients to get those type of teams he succeeded with, he doesn't know what to do. He comes off very out of touch when it comes to discussing teams like the Warriors
