Michael Wilbon: Black Folks and analytics don't mix

Are you Black? do you "like analytics?"

  • I am Black, African American, etc

  • I am not Black

  • I like & understand analytics

  • I don't have a use for analytics at all

  • I don't understand and don't want to understand analytics

  • I like or use analytics in moderation

  • Analytics is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • The Eye test is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • a mix of analytics and eye test is the best way to determin how good or bad someone or team is

Analytics only works all things remaining the same in a vaccum as it pertains to sports.

Did analytics account for missed free throws by nick Anderson & then him losing confidence?!?

Did analytics account for Lebron running out of gas, cramping up, or being moody last 3 mins of the game last night as to only shooting the ball once? Lol.
:mjlol: These are terrible points, anyone with common sense knows you cant just strictly use any stat model traditional or analytics.

(The funny thing is when these idiots like Barkely say they hate stats but still base their analysis on stats. They just don't use the more advanced (more accurate) stats but the simpler (less accurate)stat. Like Barkley always talks about rebounds and turnovers and points. There are much more accurate numbers to reflect scoring, rebounding but Barkley and most other anti-analytics people just don't understand how to use them so they shun them.
Now if you ignored numbers completely and used just the eye test it'd be different. But everyone uses numbers. The anti--analytics people are mostly those that just use the simplistic less useful ones.
It doesn't have anything to do with race
Agreed.

Wow okay... I actually know him personally, but this is good to know I guess..

you know him personally. If you get a chance can you ask him why he felt the need to try to paint Sean Taylor like a thug. Why he felt the need to go on PTI and claim that he wasn't surprised this man was murdered in his home trying to protect his family?

This board is a niche way to discuss sports in no way is it a fair representation of how people talk sports

The article is about about black people and analytics on a site that discuss race in sports

So, no it's not a generalization when that was the confines of the article

This isn't a niche forum about sports, its pretty generalist. I've talked to blacks who know advanced metrics about bball and football and never once did anyone look at that person as crazy or disregard it totally. Like I said before typically its used as an aid in a argument, not as the sole argument as some stat nerds would prefer. So trying to invalidate facts that black americans do indeed understand and use analytics is false.

On top of that I'll help you out "black people do ___________" is a over generalization.
"_____ people do _________" is always a generalization
Over generalization is a logical fallacy.
I've seen it so much that I am generally weary when someone claims they are being "real" on race and start using over generalizations and don't use nuance

the ether
i mean, what in the fukk? this guy cant even grasp why points per possession is a better metric than points per game? how do you cover games for decades and be so fukking clueless. shyt like that, and whip etc are as basic as it gets and this guy thinks its over the heads of an entire race of sports fans

I quoted and posted that right away on my thread on this too. If your understanding of the game is so worthless that you can't figure out why points/possession is more important than points/game, you shouldn't ever have been allowed to post this article.

I'm sayin'.

In my opinion, stats don't mean shyt in basketball or football because the sample size is always too small. 16 games ain't shyt. 82 games ain't shyt. Playing 45-48 minutes per game ain't shyt.

And there's not that many variables/factors in these sports to make any of these ratios worthwhile.

That doesn't work. You can't claim the sample size is too small them claim there aren't many factors...if there aren't many factors, then the sample size is far more than large enough.

Kobe took 26,000 shots in his career. Andrew Wiggins has already taken 2,500 shots and he's barely out of his teens. You can't tell me that analytics isn't going to be able to describe useful things with that data.

The game is changing.......If you want to be a part you have to keep up with the changes. I'm sure there are black people in some of the team offices.......That doesn't excuse the lack of black coaches around the league when a majority of the players are black......So when we see that plantation mentality "you do the work, I'll take care of the business"......We should point it out.

People that say they hate analytics really don't.. They just hate the people that are presenting the data.. Which is understandable, because the average analytic conference looks like a casting call for Girls or Broad City or the staff at Pitchfork...

But the use of analytics isn't new at all. It's been around for decades.. It just wasn't given a proper "label"... It's just like pimps and hoes has always been around.. Now they are just labeled "life coaches, "hosts" or "brand ambassadors...

The pretentiousness from people that couldn't make a left hand layup is what turns a lot of the jocks off..

This was a pretty shoddy piece. There's an interesting piece to be written about "analytics" that he almost hooked into when he talked about the hiring trends in front offices, which is that by painting something as "advanced" one can change the credentials for certain positions so that a certain group is predestined to take up the bulk of the jobs and phase out plenty of people who can grasp the concepts but aren't well-versed in the new lingo. Same way so many dummies are in law and business - by learning the coded language, not by virtue of intelligence.

But the whole "nikkas don't be doin this" and "nikkas really believe that" trope is tired whether employed by black or white writers, and almost always flies in the face of my personal experience.

Yall nikkas don't understand how much white people LOVE comments like these. Nothing makes them happier than sambos who are all "We jus not as smart as white folk!" or "What about black on black crime" or "Where da white women at!".

It will never change. Whites eat this shyt up and believe it 100%. I've seen the whole "black IQ is lower than white IQ" stat 10000 times. Cacs love posting that shyt. Wilbon just provided whites more ammo for them to think they r superior.

I'm exaggerating the relationship.. I've actually just met him twice.. But he remembered me and my son the 2nd time and talked to him for like 45 minutes in a hotel lobby.. He came off as 100% old school Chicago n1gga.. Cool as hell and dropped a lot of jewels on my son..

But if I run into him again I'll let him know that The Coli don't fukk with him...
