They don't have to, I tend to think VPNs are the bare minimum, but zero trust application designers and sellers claim VPNs are a thing of the past.
(This will bite organizations in the ass)
So a great deal of forward leaning (idiotic) companies (including the DoD) are moving in this route

I use my company's wifi on my company laptop. Makes it easier for me since I use a laptop anyway. Makes no difference.
