"The desktop environment" is going away in itself. Sales of desktops are constantly declining while sales of tablets/phones/laptops are rising. The benefit of using metro in that environment is to be proactive in facilitating the change in market, both for themselves and their customers.

This is moving forward, what you are arguing for is holding on to the past.

And I wish people would quit with the "Forcing it on customers" crap. There's nothing stopping you from keeping your old OS or going with a different company. Nobody forced you do to anything.
You still have yet to tell me a single benefit of metro on a desktop/laptop. Going away or declining is not the same as gone. You do realize that billions of people use windows machines right? And as much as tablets and smartphones are increasing their userbase, OEMs will continue to manufacture the desktop/laptop
the rest of this decade. They're not gonna magically vanish. They still have to cater to that userbase, but like i said, when W9 releases next year and they do a complete 180 on the metro desktop mess I'll see how you rationalize it then. Microsoft began pushing metro as an OS that was gonna unify all their devices. It failed, and they're gonna begin phasing it out this year, beginning with Windows Phone 9.

Yeah it failed cause people on the Internet are mad :russ:

In reality the use of windows 8 is on the rise accross all platforms.

Y'all make the mistake of assuming all this Internet rhetoric has a profound effect on the average consumer. It doesn't.

You don't have to take my word for it, watch what happens to metro in the coming year.

Maybe the case 10 years ago this was the case, but if you really think the internet has no effect then you are even more out of touch than the suits at Microsoft.

The "average consumer" argument died years ago, especially when it comes to tech.

Nah. The average consumer walks into microcenter and buys the PC the sales person tells them to. Nobody is in microcenter talking about ":comeon: where's the start menu"

Same reason why some of the most hated shyt on the Internet, is also the most succesful shyt in the real world.

We can both play this game.

Where do you think people starting hearing about the negativity around the new xbox one first? The guy at the newsstand near the subways?

"People" have not even really started to think about the new consoles yet. "People" are still playing and buying more Xbox 360 games than any other system. These are the successors of 80 million selling systems. The first 3 months and couple million units are nothing. Most of the early adopters are on the Internet talking shyt themselves.

Oh that's right The PS4 outselling the XBOX One by a wide margin means nothing.

Win 8 is great. With an add-on like start8 or classic shell it's actually better than windows 7. However windows 8 in its current state is utter fukking garbage in the desktop space, and it's complete arrogance in Microsoft's part not to bring back the start menu. They deserve every bit of flack they get for their incompetence and stubbornness.
Why bring back the start menu? The instant search from home screen function makes it pointless. The start menu is an awkward clunky interface of file trees anyway.

Because it works? The constant switching between metro is annoying.

I keep telling people this. If you wanna open the control panel you hit the windows key and type co that's it and it'll be the first option on the screen. hit enter and control panel pops up on the screen. don't even need the mouse.

the built in global search is just downright faster than the start menu. the start menu was always a bad interface people got attached to it because Microsoft used it for decades. now people don't wanna let it go and they've become obstinate about it not because it's a efficient well working tool but because they've used it for decades and its all they know.

i've been using Windows 8 since the first day it was released and i've never once thought damn i really miss the start menu. in fact within the first day i realized how silly the start menu is. you pin your most used programs to the taskbar and use the search for other stuff. it just works better.
