In the Army Special Forces MOS is 18a/18b/18c/18d/18e it’s not a entry level mos. but anybody can try out. Only requirement is you gotta be airborne and be able to get a top secret clearance. You gotta get through Selection first then you gotta do the Q Course. It’s at Fort Bragg,Nc. I was stationed with the 82nd so it was easy for me to sign up. You just to the SF unit and talk to the recruiter. Then you sign up. Selection is they just trying to break you mentally. Like one day they had gear up to patrol a wooded area when it pouring down rain. They had us get in the kneel ready position getting drained in rain. We sat there for 6 hours. No talking, no eating, no drinking, you couldn’t put your weapon down or nothing. We walked back to our tent because in selection you sleep in one tent with 30 dudes on cots. Talk about defeated and mentally drain. Nobody said one word in that tent.:pachaha:

Selection yes, Q Course no. They wouldn’t let me do the Q Course unless I re-enlisted. Since my first contract was the max 6 years I told myself if I reup. I’m be halfway to 20. So I might as well retire. I was 50/50 on it. Talked to the recruiter they basically said we give you a 20k re-enlistment bonus for 4 years and when you complete Q course we’ll station you in Hawaii. I was to sign but something in my head told me to think about it. I ran into my old sgt major who recently retired he was running the finance stuff at the soldier support center. I was telling him about special forces and I was uncertain about reupping. How if I did i might as well retire. He was like man I can get you a GS job working under me making way more money for less work, same benefits and same retirement. So I picked the government job.

The Truth
Met a lot of BUDs drops and SEALS… they were cool

physically not that different. Just run really well and swim really well. A couple clowns even got into SWIC just by being able to do that.

My pullup game was crazy in boot so everyone thought i was going SEAL

I never cared but was confused with SpecOps a lot. Was even in a basewide weightlifting competition and got beat by a SEAL (by one point too). Beat out a couple Devgru guys too

I hope this doesn’t come out like a five year old question :snoop:

but I have always thought about this.

How does the military select who is gonna join the elite special ops?

shyt like Team 6, Delta Force, etc.

I bet to get into any of this you gotta be A1 and the application rejection must be high.

:feedme:
You usually apply when joining the military

???

There's no group in Hawaii

They really pushed going SF especially if you were an attachment, Before I got wounded I was probably gonna have to rotate back to big army or at the very least pick up a short tab.

How did you know they were Devgru? I mean I know blue is glory hounds but SMU's are still SMU's I was at Fort Bragg worked at group and never saw a dude that was Delta who Identified himself as such. I was impressed by the secrecy We jumped over their base all the time drove past it on the way to and from ranges and I never saw a single operator I saw a couple of little birds but everytime I went pass the place seemed deserted.

you volunteer....the people who really want it keep volunteering until they get accepted. once they make it through the pipeline they get assigned to a team...if they make the team and prove to be amongst the best of the best they become eligible for further special mission units. The things that makes SF so outstanding is the time they have allowed to just train, the relaxation of certain standards, and the training and enablers available to them. It's not a certain look or build or even race that they are....My CSM over here at the school house is a SFOD guy and he's about 5'4 150.

The movies and tv romanticize things..

Well there's multiple tries for SF (unless you quit or cheat) as far as I know from people who tried out you get two tries for Delta unless there's a wired special circumstance. But I don't know because I never went tried out for any selection program.

But I can concur about the training budget, in the 82nd. You'd have your field time but in the summer? That was detail time. In Group basically the Team Sergeant made the general training schedule and there was no "detail time"other than some down time for "schools season" it was all about going to training sites all over the world especially during pre deployment work ups.

honestly that's how they get most of the airborne infantryman. Only a select few are going to get selected to continue training and even less complete training. most basically end up airborne infantryman and needs of the Army. That 18X contract is a scam.

Lot of dudes who failed selection or got kicked out by the Rangers ended up in the duece. In fact there were so many that when McCrystal needed extra support personnel he used 1-325 for backup. He did time in the 82nd and I think the commander of the 18th Airborne is a former Ranger CO.

they will literally restart some just to ensure x amount of trainees for the next cycle. Also the two tries things when they catch someone who is extra cocky they will fail them or peer them out and bet on if they come back...When it comes to the clandestine organizations they generally only have the best of the best across the military who want to volunteer. They generally seem to try guys out like an assignment for example only so many stay on. And on top of that they are now working in support of national interest fully. So you will be working in support with homeland, and the 3 letters and more.

But the dudes legit get to train to hone their craft all day and night. You know how we would do shoot houses they will legit build an entire city based on a scenario each time and they will train it until they know it by repetition. Damn the 350-1, aint no closeout formation, if they do organized PT it's something based on the team they most def get their down time. You can have a young SSG 18X acting as an LNO in a Division CP.

I have had multiple Soldiers who have went on to selection and now are assigned but the CSM is the only one I know who left the teams. And he really didn't have much choice only so many jobs. I can't even tell you that it's a certain MOS that does better I've seen 19Ds, 68Ws, 92Gs, 74Ds, 13Fs, 11Bs, all transition and they all have one thing in common they trained for that some went back 3 times.

I left out the Marines and JTACS and Seals and their corpsman....It's just an honest statement but looking back as I get ready to close the book on my career I def wish I would of gave it a couple of tries earlier in my career.
