I have a marijuana possession charge so I can't get a clearance :to: I would've tried to join the regular Army but I can't cuz of the charge too.

So I'm not sure if it's really worth joining since I wouldn't be able to get any good jobs or jobs I'm interested in. Plus I dunno National Guard just seems kinda quasi-military to me.

interesting. am I to presume that a recruiter told you couldn't get a clearance?

i'd say stack paper and go to school during your enlistment then see if you want to leave for a civil job or go to school again to double up..........

but i aint a old nikka so my advice isn't top notch yet :yeshrug:

Yeah he told me and plus I've researched it thoroughly and having a job that requires a clearance (which basically covers any job I'd be interested in) is a no go if you have any sort of drug charge. And I can't join the Air Force, Coast Guard, or Regular Army cuz of the charge too :sadbron:

So basically the only jobs open to me would be infantry or cook. So you think it's worth to get a crappy job as a part time national guardsman (and thus only getting part time pay/benefits)?

I dont know what research you have already done but I will give you the benefit of my experience...

first you need to determine how far you are willing to travel for weekend drill. typically when you go to MEPS they will only pull up positions in units that are within approx 50-60 miles of you. the primary reason being that the army reserves doesn't pay you(or at least didnt when I was in) for travel costs to and from drill. you can choose to go beyond that radius if you want but again the costs are on you. the farther away you have to go for drill the more likely you wont want to go home on saturday nights which means spending money for a hotel which isnt too bad if you split a room with someone else which is what I used to do. I was able to get rooms with a military discount and no tax.

once you determine units in your travel radius then you need to find out what MOSs they have. since you mentioned switching you need to consider length of the corresponding AIT. while you can go through a regular recruiter it is probably better to contact the unit directly. Most units have retention NCOs who in some cases can help you get into a unit that may not currently have an official opening.

Yeah my first go round was in he NG when i was in high school..ended up getting out of that contract and went active. I was looking at Navy reserve, first recruiter basically blew me off after he got my info, went to set up meetings and flaked :snoop: so i just let it go. Hopefully i get someone more proactive this time around.

Reserve center is like 30mins from home so the commute once a month isnt too bad, hopefully they have some decent MOSs there, next closest one is like 2 hours :dead:

How hard was it to go from NG to active? And do you think the Guard is worth it?

I would probably recommend that you dont go into the military right out of high school.

you have to check what educational benefits the NG offers in your state. in some states you can get near 100% tuition reinbursement. that alone might make it worth your time. plus you can get regular financial aid on top of that.

It honestly depends on your situation. Sometimes its really hard. Mine was semi easy because i hadnt gone to Basic/AIT yet..at the end of the day its up to your unit if they wanna let you go.

NG is worth it if you have a good paying job, and you wanna go to school, and or stack up some extra bread. Just depends on ya goals breh

I don't have a good job but I am trying to finish my degree. So maybe it is worth it to get the school money and maybe I could switch to active at some point.
